Yartoft

The leader of Waveney DC. has said it will not happen but should two towns only eleven miles apart join together. Joining together of the two deprived towns would put us in a much higher catagory of assisted area status attracting much more money from the EU. It has already happened with the health service PCT s. We could also apply for Unitary authority status. Away from Suffolk who has never done us any favour s.

Although Yarmouth isn't my most favourite of places, it would make fiscal/economic sense.
As you've already said, our PCTs have merged, so why not local government?
It's not an issue I've given alot of thought to, but would be interested to hear cases for and against.

I think it would be a very good idea. The more EU handouts the better. Only problem might be with Yarmouth getting the Outer Harbour they may not wish to be associated with a poorer neighbour.

As I said in my previous post of at least 10 minutes ago, I think Malcolm's reason for both towns joining are very good. I don't think "Yartoft" is a very good name. How about "Great Lowestoft".

Better than "Lowemouth", I think.
My opinion on a civic union with Great Yarmouth is coloured by my unreasonable predjudice against the place. I don't know why I don't like it there, but I don't. Must be in the genes. One of my favorite Lowestoft stories is the one about the English Civil War, where the good people of Lowestoft chose to be Royalists simply because G. Yarmouth chose to be Roundheads, and as a defense against the heathens 11 miles north, strung a rope across High Street. Even back then, we were messing up traffic.
Three hundred and sixty-five years of non-cooperation. Why start now?

What makes any of you feel that Great Yarmouth would want to be tied to Lowestoft. Because to be honest I don't think they would. The two towns have never got on why should that change now. If such a merger was to happen, brought into effect by the WDC it would only be because they felt that they could gain by it happening. They would at no time show any consideration for Great Yarmouth. They dug the hole, they need to climb out.

It may be that Yarmouth would want no part of it I dont like the place thats why i moved to Lowestoft in 1972.
On the point about the outer harbour I think it will be as much bennefit to Lowestoft as it is Yarmoth.
The name has been used before and was quoted again last week in the EDP.

Could you explain your reasons for coming to that conclusion? Thanks in anticipation.

Because the cross flow of jobs between the two town s is huge commercially its already one town. The only part of the A12 north of Ipswich which is still trunk road is that north of Lowestoft. This is because of the importance of the road and the large amount of traffic. People travelling and working between the two towns. Jobs created in Yarmouth will bennefit the whole area.
