Fen Park « Posted: 23 March 2008 at 09:57 PM »

I moved to Kirkley from Great Yarmouth May last year and loved walking through Fen Park; it was an oasis in the midst of all the traffic/noise from the new road.  However recently it is being cleared of some of the trees and a lot of the bushes have been taken down on the road side of the park.
This concerns me and I can't understand why they are doing this as it's taking away nesting sites for birds ect.  Plus now when you  sit in Fen Park you see/hear the traffic, such a shame.  It's put me off going as I don't want to sit and look at the traffic, I liked the peace and shelter the bushes and trees afforded, this clearance has made a big difference to that.  Oh well I suppose people passing in their cars can enjoy the landscaping.

I also love going to the Fen and I can't see the point of those trees and bushes being removed either, seems a bit daft as they weren't in the way of anything.  It is a lovely place to go to when you just want some time out, or to take the kids to the play area.  There are a bunch of local volunteers who clean up the place, they have done a really good job.  Shame on the idiots who chuck their cans etc into the water though.

They have done the same to Kensington Gardens and Belle Vue park.  --  Completely butchered them.
It is municipal vandalism.

Hi there Dog lover yes it is a lovely place, I was just concerned and wondered what other people thought of the clearence as seemed a shame to me, thanks for replying.
I agree it's sad so many things are thrown into the water, last time I was there I saw loads of plastic bottles/assorted rubish, and about 6 footballs!!!! very glad to hear there are people who help clean it up.

Sorry to hear that frelance, wish they would leave things alone, it's so Unnecessary to do that.

Makes me laugh , some people cant get trees cut down in their own garden as age and other factors of the tree . where as the council can cut down anything they like .

typical one rule for one ...........

Yes sarahb it seems they can just cut down anything they like, without having to follow the usual protocols, or have any particular reason to do it, no good reason I can see anyway, and there is nothing we can do to stop it. Huh

If it is elf and safety Rena they have taken it way too far   Sad and the bushes and shrubs were not exactly in anyone’s way it was undergrowth, and Rhododendrons which were all in bud.

Fen Park used to have a 2p entrance fee and have monkeys on the island and flamingos in the lake it was very different but has  always been a lovely oasis

As far as I know the council DO have to comply with Tree Preservation Orders etc.

Has anyone asked their local councillor to investigate what is happening? Do they know what is happening?
