seriously though -
i have spent many a happy sunday morning in the sparrows park, being amused by the squirrels and feeding the birds.there is an amazing flock of white doves which go there sometimes, they look tame, so i believe they must belong to someone. some of the squirrels let me stroke them, although i am always wary because they have a nasty bite if provoked.

Fen Park is a nice place to go, especially when the weather is warmer, or you want a bit of peace and quiet. It is such a shame that idiots have to throw their bottles/cans etc into the water there.

My favourite attractions are:- the guy who plays his penny whistle/flute thingy outside the Britten Centre!!! lol. The endless amount of "Gangsta Wannabe Hoodies" who find sports world their mecca! Also our own Town Hall Circus, filled to the brim with it's own "Clowns" (I'm sure it said Town Hall above the door and not Clown Hall???) lol. No, being serious now. The South Beach is very good, Belle View Park & Sparrows Nest are nice.

When the sunrise scheme first reared its ugly head, I thought that what they had done to the town centre looked pretty awful and somehow clinical. But now, a few years down the line, I quite like the town centre, it's sort of grown on me. It all looks a lot more modern than it once did and even the south side has been greatly improved to what it once was, especially around LRS and the roads leading to the seafront.
The High Street area looks great and it's nice to at least see that many of the old buildings and charm of the area has still been retained here. So for me the best attraction for the Lowestoft area is the Town Centre itself!

As well as the Water Lane Sports Centre there's a private pool at a fitness centre, I think it's on Peto Way. I think it's open to the paying public, if you want to pay more than it costs to go to the sports centre
If you've very tough there's always the sea!

Just thought of another obvious one, it's not Lowestoft, but you might try the Marina at Great Yarmouth. That's more a 'play' pool, it has flumes (I think) & a wave machine & tables at the side & cafe facilities at the side, much more conducive to relaxing & being a tourist. But it also has plenty of space for serious swimming.
Marina Centre http://www.marina-centre.com/PAGES/MarinaLeisurePool.html
The Lowestoft pool at the sports centre is, to my memory, just a rectangular hole with water in it, although it may have diving boards, I can't remember.

The pool is in the process of having a much needed major overhaul. £6m is being spent modernising both the pool and sports centre in Water Lane. Once it's been decided who will do the work from the current shortlist of tenders, the pool will be closed for 18 months while the works are carried out! Details HERE.

It was the same here Jo it was bitterly cold and not far off here they had rain and fog, but we were lucky we didnt get any snow all through, we often dont, but the cold ,cold, weather is enough, I am looking forward to the summer, that`s for sure.

Having read on here about the Seagull theatre me and the wife have been trying to think where it may be,she seems to think it is in London road South and describes the location - we go back a long time - same side as the old Saint John's church (when it was there) but not as far as Wright's motor cycle shop (do not know if that exists now) Do tell me she is wrong as I shall never hear last of it if she is right again.

I think Ann is thinking of the Arcadia as it was known in my days in Lowestoft. It was the Hollywood but don't know what it is called now or even if it is still there. The Seagull is on one of the roads leading off London Rd South almost to Pakefield I believe.I think it is in Morton Rd.

Hi Meg. As 'caz2' correctly says 'The Seagull Theatre' is where you placed it, in Morton Road. As you head northwards along London Road South there is a cross roads formed by LRS, The Avenue (on the left) and Short Street/All Saints Road (on the right). The 'Carlton' public house stands on the right just before the latter. You turn right into Short Street and then left at the Morton Road junction. The Seagull Theatre is a couple of hundred yards (if that!) on the right hand side. The 'Hollywood' cinema is still there , near the old St.John's Church site. The site is now occupied by a large block of flats for elderly residents.

Hi Suffolkboy. Re your post of looking up The Seagull Theatre on Google maps. I noticed on this that the theatre is somewhat misplaced . It shows the theatre as being a great deal further along Morton Road than it actually is. The next road up from the Short Street junction is Kendal Road - the theatre is well before this on the right.

Suffolkboy in our time Morton Rd used to be used as an annex for the art school at college did you ever go. I also remember seeing a few 60's groups there and can't for the life of me remember the name of one of them Come on help me out they sang 'Poison ivy'
The Seagull theatre is really thriving now and has a varity of good acts and local drama as well as lots of dancing, acting, singing classes in various forms on various nights

Good Morning Suffolkboy Getting back to the Seagull Theatre location on Morton Road. If you look at the 'satellite' images on Google maps you can identify the building, as the one with the large tarmac carpark at the front, on the right, just up the road a wee bit from the Short Street junction. The building was originally a school. The theatre has it's own website giving details of 'what's on' etc., Just 'google' Seagull Theatre to find it. I only know this part of Lowestoft because I have friends who live in Short Street and normally pass the theatre when I visit them - I've also done a fair amount of work for the MAFF Fisheries Lab (Cefas) over the years which is just opposite the top end of Morton Road.

Poison Ivy charted in the UK in 1959 by The Coasters (number 15) then in 1964 by The Paramounts (number 35) and again in 1980 by The Lambrettas (number 7). This info courtesy of The Guiness Book of British Hit Singles.

Platters - Only you.
Millie Small - My boy lollipop.
Laurie London - He got the whole world in his hands
Tremeloes - Even the bad times are good This one sums up our era.
There are many more I could list who performed at our local dance venues.

Conversations do meander, we arrived here by memories of Morton Rd Youth Club and groups appearing at The Royal Hotel (two historial attractions of Lowestoft) so only a little side pathway off the main road I'm sure we would have meandered back very soon.

It's over to you Mr Cattermole, tell me about what great attractions I will be able to see or visit when I return to Lowestoft. You see I have been away since 1974 and have only great memories of an era when chips meant going down to our local fish and chip shop at Pakefield terminus. Websites meant a visit to Oulton Broad to feed the ducks. Oh yes much has changed at dear Lowestoft and I am not sure if for the better, then olduns like us do not like change especially when we have lived through such wonderful times.
We have talked about the South Pier Pavillion, great dancing and entertainment venue - demolished. Same with the Royal Hotel - demolished.
Our era boasted the likes of Pye,Brooke Marine and Richards ship building,Bally's shoes,Eastern coachworks fantastic fishing fleet of both Herring and Trawlers,Fishing lads with colourful suites, the memories go on.
A picture of a thriving town don't you think,so do not be to hard on us when we take a trip down memory lane as you know like we do,things ain't the same no more. So please David tell me about what I am missing to lure me to my childhood town a place where memories abound.

Hi Sunny,I to liked Lonnie Donegan also Mr Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band. Do you remember his Stranger on the Shore. Pure magic.
Kenny ball and his Jazz men were other favourites of mine.
All three bands performed at the South Pier and Gorleston's Garibaldi.
Wow! They were the days.
