It was a dull day today in Norwich when I took this picture and the sky was completely washed out. Using Photoshop Elements (one and a half hours later after having my nose in my Absolute Beginners Guide to P.E.) I managed to get some blue into the sky...maybe a bit too much blue...it was the only blue I had though, but apart from that I am quite chuffed with the end result Wink

Very good Mel ........

comment/hint when you put the reflection in the water reduce the opacity of the layer this gives a more translucent effect.

I took the liberty of doing a variation on your sky to appeal to the sunset lovers. The hardest bit is lighting the street lamps.

I had no idea all these wonderful tweaks could be done.......I should go to classes and learn some of it.  I can only tweak the colour and brightness, and sometimes do some softening.  I have not tried really, shame, because the results here are mind blowing.  Well done old chaps!!
I even have elements loaded, my son-in-law did it for me last Christmas, and I have not even looked at it.....free for me, and no use to me, well of use, but not used.   :-[ :-[
I can't even drop down my thumbnails on here now.  For some reason the thumbnail box will not open when I try to use it LOL, I just don't understand what has happened.  I can open them up when I go to my Adobe photo shop, but all I can get here, are the names of the pix, not the pictures themselves, and with my luck, I could open one that sounded right, but was absolutely not suitable for eyes here.  Sooo, what is going on?  Any of you super shutter bugs know?

Thanks Phil and Robin, I am encouraged to practise more. If you have Elements on your computer June you ought to give it a go too. The book I have got to help me is 'Absolute Beginners Guide to Photoshop Elements 2'... have a look here June www.quepublishing.com

As to your thumbnail box June, I have no idea.

Well done Mel stick at it ..... I have elements (for about 4 years) and up to now have never used it.
I have had a go this morning and it is the same as P/Shop CS with all the bells and whistles cut out.

Here is my first go with it....... you can see some time has past since my last attempt   Grin

The edited picture has been blasted out a little. I think as dusk shot it should look like this.

I add, this is one interpretation. given  alot of time and effort the result you want  can be achieved.

Boosted curves a little.   Incidentally this is not an unusual manouvre.  it looks like the ship is either  being 'sprung round' to turn it in the narrow channel, using a bow rope as a 'lever' or is being sprung alongside, same method. Wheel hard over engines dead slow ahead.

Thanks, Phil.  Yes, I agree, my version was 'blasted out', (good expression, sums it up well. Grin)

Your edit is good, & yes, that picture would be better as a dusk shot.  Dusk photography is great for atmospheric shots, but that's not something I'm into much.  Fireworks, fairground lights & a few sunsets/rises is about all I've done so far.  I was just interested in getting light & colour into ANY dark shot, it might just as easily have been an interior shot when I forgot to set the flash. Roll Eyes

Boosted curves is a new one on me.  Thanks for that, will look it up.  ANYTHING to improve sharpness would be useful.  I use the sharpen tool a lot, but never have any joy with the unsharp mask tool (which others here mention often, & get very good results from).  Are there any tips for how to set the unsharp mask?

Re the manoever, someone else watching said the ship came in from the sea, made a 90 degree turn in that narrow channel, then turned back the way it was facing to start with, to moor where my picture showed it.  I thought the turning place for ships was a bit further down than here, ie where the Inner Harbour widens, about where Asda now is.  It looked like it tried to turn in this narrow channel, found it too difficult in the poor light, & gave up, probably to have another go in daylight?  This is all speculation though, I was just amused by the shot, I was going to use it as a funny picture saying hey, look, they've made a third harbour crossing, (as the ship seemed to be touching the land both ends).

Thanks, for your help with my questions.
