I Love Lowestoft!

Kirby of Lowestoft « Posted: 22 April 2006 at 06:22 PM »

Hi,  I am seeking information/descendants of Charles James KIRBY, born c1856 in Lowestoft. He was one of eleven children born to Edward Kirby (b. c1831 in South Wootton, Nfk.) & Eliza LOOSE (b. c1831 in Wells, Nfk.); eight of whom were born in Lowestoft or Kirkley.  I have been told that Edward Kirby was, at one time, mayor (or equivalent) of Lowestoft and I would also welcome any details of this.  When the rest of the family moved to Salford, Lancs., sometime between 1875 & 1881, Charles Kirby, a plasterer, remained in Lowestoft, marrying Phoebe Forster in 1877. They had at least sixteen children, all born in Lowestoft, Pakefield or Kirkley; some of them may have emigrated to Canada.  I am hoping to visit Lowestoft later this year, and am trying to find as much information as possible before I come.  I am also researching the LOOSE family who came from Norfolk, and any information on either of these families would be much appreciated.

Thanks very much for your replys Meryl.  I do have details on the families from all the censuses and information from the Kirkley cemetery index.  I don't know if the birth record for Pheobe Forster is correct as I have not researched her family history, nor do I have her marriage certificate yet, which would give me her father's name.  I am hoping that, with Charles & Phoebe having so many children there may be some descendants still living in the area.  I did manage to locate an elderly relative ( grandaughter of one of Charles's brothers) who insisted that a family story about a connection with the Cutty Sark (famous tea clipper) was true - only trouble is she didn't know what the connection was. I am hoping there is another descendant out there somewhere who might have more info.

There is a Kirby living in Norwich Road, he's in his 70's, he has a  son living in Beeching Drive, not sure if that helps.

Hello - I am the great daughter of Charles James Kirby who lived at 16 Lorne Road, Kirkley, Lowestoft.

A step cousin still lives at this address. Charles Kirby married Phoebe Foster daughter of George and Harriet Foster of Pakefield. My grandmother was his eldest daughter Florence born on Morton Road in 1881. He had 19 children, 15 of whom survived.

Lots more info available if required !

Hello,

Many thanks to everyone who responded to my post.  Unfortunately a family illness prevented me from persuing my family history for some time and, consequently,  I forgot to check the L. O. web site.

It was very exciting to read Patricia's response and I have sent her a personal message.

Best regards, Dawn wave
