Private firm starts running NHS Hinchingbrooke Hospital
A private firm has become the first to start running an NHS hospital. Circle, which is co-owned by doctors, has taken on managing Hinchingbrooke Hospital, Cambridgeshire, which had been threatened with closure as it grappled with £40m of debt. Circle aims to find a solution to the debt problems of the hospital by attracting new patients.
Union Unison said although the hospital had been saved, it was concerned at involving private firms in the NHS.
The groundbreaking £1bn, 10-year deal will see Circle assume the financial risks of making the hospital more efficient and paying off its £40m of debts.

This business of involving private enterprise has been brought up elsewhere on this site in the past. Now it has actually happened, do you think it will work? I believe it has to be a 'suck-it-and-see' situation. You won't know until you try.

All I will say is this is the first of the break up of the NHS as we know it. It is the first of the privatised hospitals. It will look the same for a while so everyone thinks 'Thats ok its going to be great' then gradually and sneakily there will be payments start to set in until one day we will all wake up, well I may be under the daiseys, and realise the NHS is NO more
The torys have always wanted to do this their dream is coming true little by little It may be the first hospital but littler bits are already being shaved off The health promotion dept/community workers is gone to trust status in this area but most people dont realise it yet

I tend to agree with Boatbuilder I think we have to try something different to get our under performing hospitals on an even keel and if this means using private enterprise to get the process started let us give it a go.
I don't believe that the Tories want to get rid of the NHS, David Cameron said yesterday "The NHS will be just like you experience it now - it is free at the point of use, you don't pay anything, and it is according to your needs". So until they ask for my credit card at A&E I will go along with the reforms.

Mel I dont want to be rude- but coming from the inside if you like, that is what they want you to believe and most people will. Over the Irish sea you pay for everything doctor, scripts, xrays, childbirth, dentists, emergency hopital stays,- I ll leave it at that

Funkychick I understand that some people who work in the NHS are worried about privatisation and how it would affect them and their patients and I do appreciate all the hard work done by the caring profession. But I think the NHS is in need of an overhaul; the last government threw money at the NHS which didn't work...patients were still dying of malnutrition, wards were dirty and there seem to be more managers than surgeons and still the bill kept rising. Maybe using private enterprise won't be the solution but I still say let us give it a chance and I will repeat what I said before"...until they ask for my credit card at A&E I will go along with the reforms".

Why should a hospital run as a business, how can that be more economical? I am willing to be proved wrong but i do not understand the concept
