Road works « Posted: 29 January 2012 at 02:40 AM »

Anyone noticed that following complaints about the roadworks near Lowestoft bridge we now have  roadworks at the roundabout at the bottom of Normanston drive bringing the diverted route into chaos Sad
How clever are our local planners buggering up both routes into Lowestoft north at the same time!!

Maybe National Grid should've left the gas leaking from the damaged pipe in Oulton Broad for five weeks, until the town centre roadworks had finished?
Would that be better? Emergency works happen any time. They don't plan for them.

Incidentally, roadworks have nothing to do with local planners. Suffolk County Council coordinate works on the highway.

The local planners can't be blamed for the roadworks.
They can be blamed for leaving so many roads closed, pedestrianised or one way only that any roadworks in the town cause total chaos as there's nowhere else for traffic to go.

I heard today of one poor bloke who was so long in a traffic jam in Lowestoft that his MOT and tax ran out.The only good thing was that the police didn't tow his car away as the tow truck was already stuck in the jams the other side of the river.

Wouldnt that be funny, the police chasing a car after a robbery the bloke just hets over the bridge and the police are trapped. Could be the Lowestoft version of Starsky and Hutch.

Some of the traffic jams last so long that the cars in them now feature on ordnance survey maps.

They looked like they were putting up scaffolding on station square itself.Maybe they are going to have a sewer above ground.Or is it the first stage of the third crossing?.

Yes O.S is the "take your chance crossing" two wooden ramps and with a nice long run up you might beat the traffic

The Chief Executive keeps saying he was going to take steps (if he had notice) to minimise the disruption.
Whats he done so far?.
Nothing.
They could have altered the timing of the useless traffic lights at the bottom of Suffolk Road and allowed traffic to temporarily use the pedestrianised bit as an alternative to the closed off left turn into waveney road. They could have given Paul moss and his cronies a flag, whistle and hat and let them direct traffic. They might not be any good at it but they could then see first hand what a total fist up they've made of Lowestofts roads.

Suffolk County Council care nothing for North Suffolk. They make all their choices in their glass tower without leaving Ipswich

I live in North Lowestoft and I always shop in Yarmouth. It is quicker and easier to get too and has better shops too. Sad yet true. The only time I would venture through Lowestoft is at 8pm to shop at ASDA.

I cycle to work across town as this is the only way i can get through, plus its healthier, cheaper and quicker !!!

728 - I was referring to the type of shops they have rather than the amount of empty ones. More choice in Yarm than Lowie.

Bigger Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys,  ( although when the Gorleston Sainsburys open that will be bigger than any supermarket  in Yarmouth or Waveney ) Matalan, TKmax, Comet, River Island, blue inc to name but a few and a very good market.  This is all my opinion of course

Not always cycle racks are best, also the benches with hand rests can suffice but in this town with all the lightfingered scum about its best a bike is locked to something secure and put there for that purpose.

Re: Road works « Reply #42 Posted: 05 March 2012 at 10:44 PM »

coolskin, Lowestoft are in line to get many of those names you mention. Blue Inc's retained agents were interested in the former yours unit, it got to the stage of taking to Roche however they could not agree terms. TK Maxx were asked to come to Lowestoft however they felt due to two shops in Norwich and one iin Yarmouth their would be too much "crossover trade". Sainsburys are looking for a site in Lowestoft but cannot find any to suit their positioning requirements. Matalan have a requirement for here. So maybe ASDA and Tesco could expand Cheesy

Sainsburys have been trying to find a site since the 80's here  Huh

well 728 lets hope so. until then I will head north for quickness and choice.... Matalan would fall under tkmax terms I would have thought ? sainsburys well there are plenty of sites I could mention!!

Its good the roadworks have finished and well done to WDC for their unstinting efforts to negate the problems they caused.
At last Lowestoft town centre can return to its place as the thriving hub of a busy metropolis,a magnet for the hoardes of discerning shoppers that descend on it on a daily basis.

I can remember many years back seeing a bike wheel securely locked to a cycle rack. The rest of the bike had been pinched.

Only ever lock a bike through the mainframe, not using wheels, especially wheels that have a quick release! Although there's a remote possibility what you saw Meryl was because the owner had lost the lock key and had no option to unscrew the wheel and leave it behind!

Of course there is that possibility but can't help thinking that the  rest of the bike was not a lot of good without the wheel.
