Internet Security programs « Posted: 24 January 2012 at 07:41 PM »

I currently use Kasperksy Internet Security 2012 - and have used their products for a number of years.  Buying the yearly downloaded update costs, I think, around £35 (due for renewal early April).

I see that I can buy the programme (for up to 3 machines) from Amazon for £22.  Would this be OK?  I presume that I’d have to completely remove my existing program before loading the new one.

I was seriously considering to changing to Norton (excellent reviews) for the same price - however, it doesn’t seem to have a banner blocker (useful as I don't see the ads on this site!  The Kaspersky does have it - since 1st Jan it's stopped 15187 x Banners / 1 x Trojan / 4 x Spam.

I can't speak for the program you are currently using, Trigger but I have done the same with Norton and you have to uninstall the old version first.

Re: Internet Security programs « Reply #6 Posted: 24 January 2012 at 08:19 PM »

I'm not against  the free ones but - having had a "problem" when I'd just started with a new ISP - and I had an email from them to the effect that I had (that day) "posted" out some 9000 emails - and that if it happened again my account would be cancelled!!  This was a "problem" caused, I understand, by something within the AVG program which gave a false reading - which, IMO, they should have been aware of.  I posted the problem with a computer forum and asked for their opinion on this matter and all the replies advised paying for a prorgam and, of the replies, all bar one, recommended Kaspersky.  I still have AVG on my lappie!  And, on the occasions that I've helped someone set up a new computer, I always advise AVG.

But, whilst you may "never had a problem" that doesn't mean that other people don't.

I didn't know AVG did free internet security.
I use their free anti-virus, and have done for many years.
FC, do you have a link for their free internet security?

I didn't know AVG did free internet security.

I may be responsible here for this misunderstanding - I mentioned that I use a IS program - and Have AVG on my laptop.  I know that it now does a few extra things that the basic Anti-Virus programs didn't do.

From what I have read about AVG, yes their free version includes internet security - the 2012 one.

This is from their website.  The first one is OK for browsing, etc, but it would seem they suggest the other for things like online shopping, banking, etc.

I took my Laptop to be cleaned a few months ago and the computer shop advised me to take off AVG Free as they were seeing a lot of people with problems caused by the 2011 version. So even though AVG had served me well for many years I took it off my Laptop and installed Microsoft Security Essentials which Computer shop recommended as the best.

Ok.

I been reading this thread...and each to what they are happier with..

BUT..

I use Avira (Free Version)...purely because it has better protection than a lot of 'paid for' software..

I've used Avira (free) for years and years...ever since i read the comparison against other hi-profile 'paid for' AV..

To date..It's never let me down..(and i visit some of the darker sides of the web)

I trust it...As much as anyone can trust AV software..

(The comparison is easily Googled)

Snowdrop...

You wont go wrong with the 'Free version' of Avira..Just remember to make sure it's updated at least twice a week..

I've used it for years..Saved me plenty of times..

Just Google 'Avira Free'..

Avast Internet Security is VERY VERY good at around £30 a year for  3 PCS.
http://www.avast.com/en-gb/internet-security

Comodo is also very good, with free remote support in the pro package at around £35-40 a year.  Just google "comodo pro" ;]

I too have bit the bullet and removed AVG.  I have been using it for around 3 years, and changed from Norton.  But as of yesterday I have started fixing all friends and family computers with MSE; AVG appeared to be allowing viruses and more importantly worms onto PCs undetected.  Since the install on my fathers PC last night, MSE discovered 6 pieces of adware and other undesirables!  I shall be doing the same to my computers at home too, as it seems to be the best free security program out there right now.

MSE still scores less than 'Avira Free' for stopping viruses...

Sorry...But you can still freely Google the shedload of independent comparison sites....

It is truly out there for anyone to check..from 100% reputable people/websites..

Snowdrop, mcafee comes with many computers these days, it'll do the job but if you really want AVG you'll need to register your email for the free version, it'll ask you if you want to upgrade to the pro version probably giving you a 30 day free trial but click no.  It depends what you download and what websites you visit but you should always have some sort of firewall turned on. Smiley

Also, you don't need a new computer. Aslong as you have the right operating system and minimum specifications you should be fine. Eg (Windows XP,vista,7.)
If you need any help setting one up I'll write a guide or can give remote support Smiley

Oh right, well clicking those banners will just be adware not a virus, I recommend you download C Cleaner, This will help get rid of cookies and everything else and will also stop the pop-ups!...
Some adware can contain viruses, so please dont download anything, even if it looks real within the advert.
Uninstall Mcafee & Install AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2012, costs nothing and will do the job just fine:
http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition-2012/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?part=dl-avg_free_gb&subj=dl&tag=button

Kaspersky will sort itself out and upgrade itself. If it needs to unistall the old version the installer will do it automatically.

Personally I always buy the previous year's version from Amazon, usually about £20 for 3 PCs. I install that one from the CD, activate it and then download the newest version from their website.

It's crazy that it's cheaper to buy a new disk than upgrade via the Kaspersky website. Surely an electronic upgrade should be cheaper?

Paul - that's what I'm planning to do in a couple of months time.  I'm using their Internet Security Suite 2012 (updated free recently).  It's £40 to renew (as far as I can see).  I can buy the boxed product licenced for 3 users (so can put it on laptop) for £22 from Amazon!

Same for AVG Internet Security 2012.
Amazon have it for £17, and that allows you to put it on 4 systems, and it's a 2-year licence too.

Which program told you this?

Also which program are you using to read your emails?

Was the email from someone you know?
Although that's no guarantee that the email is safe, I'd recommend not opening emails when you don't recognise the sender.
