Well's Photography in London Road North.  They sold their business to Jessops.
Naturally Woolworths, which is now the main QD store in London Road North.
Tandy's in The Britten Centre, which is now Game.
Andy's Records up London Road North, which is now Subway.
Rachel James on Station Square, which is now Sound & Vision.

I would love to join in Meg - but I can’t remember that far back!  evil6

I know that I liked to get an ice cream cornet at Binghams - ‘cos I rather liked the lady who served them!  I recall that they had twins (ladies) working there and, when serving in the restaurant if a customer complained or said their order hadn’t arrived - they would say “Sorry, I didn’t serve you.”  Customer: “But you did!” etc etc - then the truth would be revealed!

And they also said if one of them had a date - and didn’t want to go, the other one would go in her place!  Shocked

I remember when Marks & Spencers had a cafeteria as did British Home Stores.I don't think Woolworth's ever did though.Wasn't there a smaller Woolworth's opposite where the Grand Cinema was?I can remember my mum buying broken biscuits at the Woolworths in the High street-guess they were a lot cheaper than the unbroken ones!

Meg: M&S had a cafe in years gone by - as did BHS (and they had a separate Ice Cream seller who taught me - when I were very young - how to say Neapolitan!).  Think it was still there in rhe 60s - but that’s a guess.
I believe that the Woolworths you mentioned - opposite the Grand - was their temporary home after the war.

Did Robertsons have one of those overhead wire things that had a little wooden cup thing that the assistants used to put the money in from a sale, they pulled a handle - and it raced along to the cashiers desk.  They sorted the change and receipt out and sent the “cup” back to the assistant.  I know that Catlings had one of those "air pipe" systems" for sending the money to the cash office.

And my Mum’s Co-op Divi number was 1456.
