Fair call Mel. I shall say no more in fear that I get this topic locked again. Wink

Have you no sense of adventure? I'll probably get barred for life if I lock it again!  evil6

I’ve been in Tesco Metro and went to the Self-Serve till - and, before I started, I opened up one of the plastic carrier bags in readiness to received my goodies.  I then pressed Start - and then turned to get the first item out of the basket and THAT voice boomed out “Unexpected item in bagging area. Please remove before continuing” - aargh! So, I had to wait for the assistant to saunter up.  I told her what I had done: 1) opened the bag, 2) then pressed Start - and the voice boomed out.

“It’s ‘cos you’ve moved the bag,” she said.  “But, I had to open the bag to put my items in,” I replied.  “Opening the bag must have changed the weight,” she declared.  Thinks: if the bag weighs, say, one gram unopened, then by her logic opening it and thus letting air into it must increase the weight!  She reset the machine . . and I proceeded with my purchases. No wonder I’m more confused than confused.com!

Nope your doing it wrong, using logic.

You scan each item in turn, and after each item you place on after-counter.  At the end you do the usual, pay etc.  Only when a receipt has been issued do you actually place the items in the bag, all the while panicking whilst the machine tells you to please remove your items.  And under no circumstances do you ever place your own bag on the counter - it doesnt matter what you do, this confuses the machine and results in a call for a human being.

Its real easy to use self-serve..... as long as you do not use logic.

I've never used a Tesco self serve checkout, but I have not had the problems with putting items in the bags as I go, in other supermarkets, so your logic is totally wrong, JJ.  After scanning the items a voice will tell you to put the item in the bag.   If you have 15 items or so there is unlikely to be room to place them anywhere else other than in the bagging area.

Strange that I'm doing it wrong (according to you, that is) . . . having done it that way for some 2-3 years at Tesco, Sainsbury and Asda with no problems.

when self scanning first came about, I used one at Asda, started scanning then stood there whilst it bleated out unidentified object, I kept removing what I though was the offending item until a member of staff came to my aid, the unidentified item was my rucksack, placed on the scales.  Huh Huh

The first one I saw and used was about five years ago in the Dover Tesco.  This was built like one of the regular “counters” with a conveyor belt - and the “collection area” for the items as they came off the belt.  So, I scanned the first item and put it on the moving conveyor belt, then next item, then the next - and so on until the machine “threw a wobbly” and a member of staff came over to sort me out.

Turns out - after you’d scanned the first item you placed it on the belt - then had to wait until it went into the “collection area” - then you did the next item.  I think it took longer to scan your items than to shop for them!  When I was next in Dover (visiting family), went to Tescos - and the self-serve tills had gone!  crybaby2

The best ones I’ve encountered are the ones in Asda - who also have very helpful assistants.

I'd shout back at it!   Grin

The only problem i've really had there is if, after scanning, I put the item into the bag too quickly - the 'pooter needs a few seconds for a breather!
