Shopping is becoming a minefield « Posted: 19 January 2012 at 07:06 PM »

So, I set out to go down town to purchase 3 or 4 small items - first port of call is M&S - but, before I can reach the door, the Big Issue seller calls “Hello, duh, duh, duh” or whatever it is they say. I declines - and I go in and do my shopping.  Then I have to leave via the main entrance - and then he tries again and gets the same response.  Then onto the next two shops - and no assailants.  Homeward bound now - which means going passed the BI seller again - with the same treatment.

The next port of call is Smiths - and I walk in through the left-hand side door and, just inside ahead of me are two tall, smartly-dressed black guys - one of whom starts his opening gambit of “Hello, how are you, Sir?”- which elicits a “I’m not interested, thank you.”  I think it was some charity they are collecting for.  I do what I have to do there - and then I need to go to the till, and the same man pounces again and gets the same “I’m not interested,” remark.  I pay for my purchase, and before I can leave the other guy pounces with the same remark - which brought forth the reply: “I’ve just told your friend “No” - and it applies to you as well.”

Then to Holland & Barrett - there is a large display of the product I want - but no price labels or tickets.  So, I go to the counter to ask the price - this I accept, but add the comment that I thought it was general policy in shops to display the price of the products.

Next stop is Specsavers - who have started this recently - of a member of staff immediately wanting to know if they can help you - they get a one-word reply “Contacts” - which they can’t help me with, anyway. Fortunately, they let you out easily!

Infamy - infamy - they’ve all got it in fer me!

Fortunately I made it home with no further interruptions - but needed a double strength Espresso (with sugar) to revive me!
And, yes, I know there has be charity collectors - but, I have the donations to the charities I support paid monthly by my Bank  And I’m fed up with assistants who have to approach a customer immediately they  walk in the shop. I think I may well change my name to Victor Meldrew!

Big Issue sellers are like most people selling items, they are desperate and its all in the numbers, the more times you ask people the more chance there is of selling.  I find the best way for all sellers and charity collectors is to smile and say no thank you to them in a firm and friendly manner.

Holland & Barrett; as the former manager of the Lowestoft store, I know firsthand how stressed out all staff are, with head office not allowing the staffing levels needed.  I also happen to know that the lady who took over from me as manager (the former supervisor) is currently off on maternity leave, as is the supervisor, and the current acting manager is a recently-promoted part time staff member (the girlfriend of a friend of mine) who is frankly in way over her head.  I agree about the prices needing to be displayed either on shelf or product, but many other companies also fail; Tesco for many weeks have failed to display a price for their own brand muesli.

At least people are trying to make you feel welcome - nothing worse than being in a shop, ignored by sales assistants!

Re: the Charity Sellers - that is what I do - although I didn't explain it as well as you!  Smiley  One doesn't usually see Charity Sellers inside a store - and having already had dealings with the BI seller, it didn't help the latest volley.

I didn't realise that "people had to make me feel welcome" - by going into the store - if they are busy and there's a queue, I wait my turn - patiently. However, I was just walking through to get the upper floor and, as I said, they can't help me re: my lenses.

You should try 'dodging' those BI Sellers when you are pushing a wheelchair, Trigger.   It's a lot easier when you are on foot alone and can dodge about a bit or walk fast enough past them so that you don't hear them.

No doubt I will get the same welcome in Specsavers tomorrow when I go to pick up my new glasses.  I will of course welcome it as they will we able to hep me.   Just hope they are also there to open the door so I can push my wife's wheelchair through easily.  Smiley

I dont let them bother me either just say a polite no thanks with a smile I do feel sorry for them because its a thankless task trying to sell those darned mags  I think there are better ways to earn a paltry sum

I ve started getting a lot of mobile calls telling me I am owed some amazing sum of compensation and they are getting me answering between clenched teeth yesterday when they told me I was due compensation I said' for what' and she said 'well you have had finance in the last 10 years' and I repy 'no I haven't and she said but you MUST have Time for phone to go down

FC, We get maybe three calls a week on our land line from an 0843 number which gives out a recorded message about the same thing - PPI -  I just put the phone down every time.  If it is from the same source each time you think their system would get the message.

Funkychick..

In all honesty...Why are you even answering phone calls from people you don't know...

If i dont know the number...I just dont answer it...

I get no mobile spam calls...purely because i dont give ANY company/stranger/business...not even my bank or any governmental department, the number...

My house phone is answered by the answer machine..Which will allow me to hear whatever message they want to leave...That way it costs the spammers for the connection...

If it's important..They will leave a message..Which i can intercept by answering it..If i want to...

I just dont answer any phone call from someone i dont know...Mobile or otherwise..

PS..

Boatbuilder...

No...if you actually 'answer it' they know your a 'live' one...and will keep calling..The software knows the difference between you picking it up..or the 'answer machine' talking to them...

If you let the answer machine 'answer' it...It's registered as a 'Not live'..( maybe 50 times of 'answer machine' and you will be removed from their 'calling list')

But whatever you do...you will still be called..purely because they got your number..as it passed between different spammers..

And that is 100% fact...

Check it on Google...

Never answer a call from somone you dont know..There aint much you can do..other than just NOT answer it...

Never answer any 0834/0844/0845 numbers...Its all crap from those numbers..and nothing you want to know about..

If it is important...They will leave a message..
