What will bring the tourists in?. « Posted: 19 January 2012 at 09:46 AM »

With WDC proposing to allow unlimited industrial building with no planning restraints on the so called harbour conservation area which will include industrial buildings on stilts to allow tourists to peep underneath and through a fence to see what were once views of the sea, yacht station and harbour I think visitors numbers will decline still further.
Which is best for tourism, sea views and a historic fishing dock,or yet another industrial estate?.
Visitors already see the awfull Tuttles building and a town centre dying on its feet,do they really need another reason to go elsewhere?.

Surely the prospect of more employment and better prosperity for Lowestoft is preferable to maintaining your view of the sea.

I cannot believe that tourists come here to look at an empty dock. Nor do they flock to Waveney Road in order to take in the sea views. They have a few miles of beach to do that from.
The harbour area is an industrial zone. Therefore it's the best place for industrial development.

I agree with Juststu I can understand how it effects you OS and can see your dissappointment but remembering the area as an industrial area with a very busy port, heaving fish markets, trains(trucks) carring the stuff away from the docks fisher girls wandering around and the shouting and noise from the ongoing fish auctions I would love to see it converted to a busy area agai; as fishing will not return then energy or any sea industry is what should be there  Views of the sea are not happening from Wavney Rd that is river/harbour viewing. Views of the sea come from the prom, south pier ( and I would love the two piers to be done up and  improved ) and anywhere along Marine Parade

Personally if I was moving to Lowestoft for the sea view I would not be looking at Waveney or Whapload Rd

I thought I'd post this here so that I can remnd myself what it used to look like when I've got some hideous monstrosities on stilts to look at instead.
The harbour area is not classified as an industrial area, its a conservation area.Have a look at the WDC map.

OS it was aways a working port,-  in your time here it hasnt been, i presume it was made a conservation area because there were old buildings in that area deemed worth preserving

I think your poll is totally biased and not really worth voting in because at this stage we have no idea what they are going to encourage being built there, if it turns out to be a higgeldy piggeldy mish mash of shacks as you have named it then you will have been proved right, however if it is buildings in keeping with a harbour area and of use to encourage some new businesses into the area then  I think the sacrifice of your view will be worthwhile after all you had already decided to move away

When I arrived here I reopened the old fishing store "East Coast Stores" and supplied all the fishing boats that were at that time operating out of the harbour.I often had four of five full sized trawlers outside the windows and would supply everything from the cutlery to the crews gloves.
So it was a working port in my time here and my shop like the two others in Battery Green Road was a part of it.
The others closed but I have carried on despite the fishing industry being killed off,the traffic system, yellow lines and being the only person on in the area being forced by the council to obey the stipulations of their 'conservation ' area status.
I think after all this I'm entitled to some sort of consideration.I appreciate most peoples view wont be affected,I bet they'd play a very different tune if it was.
If that makes me biased, yes I am and I'm proud of it.
I've a property to look at as soon as I can,I'll be checking if the council teher have the same reputation for bungling, fiddling and lying as this one before I make an offer.

OS, you mentioned these buildings on stilts.  But is it possible (maybe from a planning website) to see pictures of what the proposed buildings will actually look like?

I can understand your frustration as a resident.  Anyone would be angry to learn of such units, or a busy road, or anything similar, being planned right outside their window.  Especially if the view from their window was one of the main plus points for living in that location - a location that, in other respects, has a number of negative points.

So if there are any planning pictures available online please could you post them here where we could see them, & see what you mean?  Thankyou.

OS I knew your shop orignally dealt with the shipping industry which is why I thought you would understand it is and always has been a working area I admire the fact that you have kept going when others have flaked I also think you have done well to deviate and change your business to fit in with the times however I think your disappointment  is overiding the fact that it is an area which needs improving and building up

If you had bought a house on Marine Parade specifically  to enjoy sea views and then they built a large industrial factory in front of you I would  be hundred per cent behind you. My main point is you didnt buy that home for the view, that was the added bonus ,you bought it for its business side, so can you truely  be justified  when considerations to build on this area for industry and not residential are taken by WDC

As I said previously if WDC sc.... up and I agree they often do, then you will be vindicated  but at this stage we dont know and surely its a chance  that needs trying to improve a run down area

This is a picture of the buildings on stilts from the 'consultation ' document. The yacht station is the building in the background.
I bought this as a business but also to live in,I was told no building would ever be allowed on the docks, then again I was told the idea of it being a conservation area would enhance it.Just another load of lies from a council I now despise as a result.
A pity no one told them that the railway tracks were concreted over about thirty five years ago.

The full thing is here.http://consult.waveney.gov.uk/consult.ti/PowerParkDraftLDO2012/viewCompoundDoc?docid=2335828&partid=2337172&sessionid=&voteid=
