Waller's Raid Memorial Slide Show
« Posted: 12 January 2012 at 11:09 PM »
The Waller's Air Raid Memorial Slide Show takes place at the Marina Theatre, lowestoft, at 2.30 pm on Friday 13th January. the event has been organised by the Jack Rose Old Lowestoft society, and falls on the 70th anniversary of the worst air raid on the town of world war two in 1942. This is a traditional two-part slide presentation, by local historian John W Holmes, and yours truly will be giving some verbal support to John by way of detail on the various air-war events featured in the show, including the background to the tragedy 70 years past. One of the four bombs dropped by a lone Dornier Do 217, flying low and through a snowstorm, scored a direct hit on Waller's Restaurant and shop, where many service personnel and civilians were at tea. In the devastation that followed, 70 people were killed and over 100 injured.
Simon Baker will also be at hand with copies of the LAS-published Air War Over Lowestoft 1939-1945 in the foyer on the day.
The show will be followed by a minute's silence at the theatre and a short wreath-laying ceremony at the commemorative plaque at the end of Marina Road (Savers). This memorial was erected by the Jack Rose Old Lowestoft Society on the 50th anniversary of the event in 1992.
Tickets are selling fast ! Various civic officials including Waveney MP Peter Aldous and Mayor Tod Sullivan will also be in attendance.
Tickets are all £6 each, and details can be had from the Box Office on: 01502 533200.

I sincerely wish we could, cmp111, but unfortunately the Friday event was a one-off organised by the Jack Rose Old Lowestoft Society to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the event. I was reliably informed afterwards that more people attended this show than were at the 1992 event to commemorate the 50th anniversary!
Having said that, my co-author Simon Baker and I are going to be doing a series of shows on the theme of our Air War Over Lowestoft 1939-1945 book, to raise £ for the Air Fest, Lowestoft War Memorial Museum, and other good causes, so I'll probably post details on here when we are ready to go.
Thanks for the compliment.
