Further to ongoing saga of my “problems” with connecting with bt.speedtestcom (post #75) - I’ve just had a chat with PN about my speeds - especially Upload. I explained that I could not run the speedtest via the bt.speedtest.com - they recommended trying another browser (try that later). We adjusted the Netgear setting “Wireless Network - channel” and changed from 11 to 6. They tend to “not be interested” if you’re not using one of their (supplied) routers. But we continued . . and they recommended to try connecting via an Ethernet cable rather than wirelessly. So did this (at around 05:15am!) and I ran speedtest.net and my result is shown below - whilst the upload is the same - the download went from 4.79 Mb/s @ 04:49am to 14.72 Mb/s!
I downloaded and ran Firefox (which I’ve tried before and don’t like!) and went to the btspeedtest site - but couldn’t run it from there either! The page just “whites out” and the little blue ring spins forever and ever until you get a message that the page is not responding! But - the basic “problem” with the speeds seem to stem from the wireless connection. If I go back to a cable connection, this means I’ll have to get someone in to do it - as my router is not in this room - it’s in the hall! And if I can’t get the BT test to run on FF or IE9 then I may well have to call in an engineer - as this seems outside my limited knowledge!

And that is why I have my desktop connected via cable. Wireless internet is not all people make it out to be, it was never designed to be used as extensively or relied upon as it is nowadays. Connecting via cable is always going to be the better option. I reserve wifi for my laptop for when I just want convenience, or for when I visit other people. You will always get a slower and less reliable connection when using wifi.
Try downloading Google Chrome browser and running test, I swear by Chrome for most things.

Thanks for your comments, JJ - appreciated. Having now woken up fullly (!) and thought it through, I'm going to leave it as it is. the lower speeds are no problem for me - I just pootle around here and there and send/receive a few emails. My downloading of "large" items is very limited (mainly MS updates, etc) and even at some 2-3 Mb/s is totally adequate for me. If I abandon wif-fi, I'll have to have rewiring done - router is in the hall, I'm in here - and there's no wiring 'twixt router and this phone point.
But an interesting exercise to carry out! PlusNet didn't seem overly busy before 5am!

I know that when I was with BT I understood that the BT Speedtester would only run if you were with BT Broadband, and even then it was a bit temperamental. I know it has been said that PlusNet is part of BT but that doesn't mean it will work with them.
I have tried it with Safari which I use. I connect OK to the speedtester but the only thing I don't comply with is the ethernet connection which they state should be used. The test ultimately fails at the last stage. When I was with BT it used to work - when it wanted to - with wireless, although I think it didn't state then that you should use ethernet.
I will email you three pictures Trigger of the screens I go through in this process and you will see what I get.

BT probably told all their customers the same! But, I can assure you Plusnet detail it on their appropriate “Help” page - which starts: “The BT Broadband Speed Test (or Performance Tester) will help you to diagnose the cause of speed problems. Generally we'll only ask you to use it if a problem is reported with your broadband speed.”
Link
to that page.

I think it stands to reason that your wifi connection would be much slower. rather than pay for an engineer and rewiring could you consider running the network through your mains plugs? They are only about £36 for two and that would be all you needed - one from your router to the mains and one from the mains to your PC.

On the odd occasions I have connected to my router with ethernet for the purpose of troubleshooting, I have found no difference in my download speeds.

Frankie - I have a pair of those - but currently (no pun intended!) they're heavily involved with my TV! But I think for my "light" usage - remaining with the wi-fi is the easiest & cheapest option.
BB: Mine varied dramatically - Wi-fi = 04.49 Mbs - Cable: 14:27 Mbs

I would have thought that with a variation like that Trigger there is either a router wireless fault or a fault with the computer's wireless. Was there a router re-boot between those readings? How far away is the router from the computer and is there anything 'between' them that could interfere with the wireless signal?
