Hi from London « Posted: 05 January 2012 at 08:16 PM »

I am thinking of moving to Lowestoft, and would really appreciate any feedback of what it is like to live there, and find work? I am a Teaching Assistant, many years experience, and qualified NNEB ~ please tell me honestly how life is there, and the down falls? I am in London now, and know a few people in Lowestoft and visited many times. Love the beach and Asda!
Thanks

Hi Deni, In many places if you have a job life is good, I have been born & bred in Lowestoft never been out of work & am now 81 years old and I love this town but it is struggling more than most at the moment.
My advise would be first get the job you are looking for and then you will be able to enjoy living in Lowestoft, until then stay put.
By the way this site is the "last stage saloon" so don't expect too many replies.
Best wishes to you.

Lowestoft is a lovely town and my job requires sitting down all day so suits me fine ferrying people around the town Smiley If you are a teaching assistant and still want to be in that area of work my advice would be to contact Suffolk County Council education department. The lows I cannot really think of that many to be honest. But Lowestoft is like any town at the moment with the economy.

Good choice of streets - my area - started life in lowestoft lived other parts  the world and a few places in Uk , lended up back here and like the place you ll notice a lot slower pace, less crime, lovely surrounding countryside, cheaper housing and a gorgeous beach but easy access to cities. Jobs round here are a problem but there are schools and kids everywhere so you'll probably be ok

Trains are easy to Liverpool Street just dont travel before 9am as price is dearer

Welcome to LOL Denise. Depending on where you finally find a job could well dictate if you live north or south of the bridge - so avoiding having to travel over the bridge at peak times.   Plenty of nice places both ends of town.  I am in Carlton Colville on the south side which is only 2.5 to 3 miles from the bridge, depending on whereabouts in CC you are.  It is pretty quiet here.  Good luck with your job hunting.

I think there is one direct train from London to Lowestoft or other way round. Otherwise you could go by train via Norwich. I live on London Road South in Pakefield near the Tramways pub.

I was very keen on a house in Windsor road, but when we visited found a huge group of teens hanging around the end of the road....same problem it seems in Cleveland rd.......is this true? The estate agent said it was on going, but I don't understand how they are allowed to hang out there......anyone know of this?

Avoid that area Denise, Cleveland Rd. Windor Rd and Grovenor Rd have beautiful houses and very cheap but the use of the beautiful big house has been the downfall with some of the houses being multi ocupancy rooms or flats  and attracting singles and DSS There has always been a drug/alchol problem surrounding that area, although having said that I have an aquaintance who has lived in Windsor Rd for years and years but thats my opinion

Denise...

Avoid  'London Rd South'...(and everyone here actually knows that and knows why it's bad... and i have no idea why people are singing its praises...Its 'Bed and Breakfast/Drug Addict land)

But in all honesty, Lowestoft is still a far, far better place to live than London...

Sorry if i upset anyone here...But i am not going to paint a false picture...and my old job (as a Coroners assistant at the Paget Hospital) knows the score about South of the bridge and the homeless/drug addicts..

Paul you are sooooo wrong London Rd Sth is a long road and there is only one part of it that has the problem you speak of it and that as you rightly say is south of the bridge but from Carlton Rd to pakefield which is over a mile London Rd Sth is a great place to live and the houses are beautiful and i can assure you I have direct knowledge to be able to say that

If you look in one of my previous posts you will see i said Carlton Rd southwards there is an area on LRS from the bridge to Grovesnor/Cleveland/ Windsor that I would avoid but the rest is a fine road

i m sure a former MP wouldnt continue living in such a dire road

Pauly I think you need to have a good hard long look at what you are saying, quite stupid to considering its the biggest road in Lowestoft stretching from the Tramways pub to the bridge. I would love to know where you live in Lowestoft, what road?? Smiley I live on this road and know many others who do, and I think your fighting a losing battle against the over 600 houses on this one road each containing large families.

Thats what i actually meant in the first place..I didnt mean it's entire length..but reading my post back...i can see why everyone exploded..

Not exploding Paul but its a case of giving very wrong impressions and completely wrong information We had already gone over throughly about the bit of LRS which isnt so desirable  so happily we can all agree that from about Claremont or Carlton Rd southwards LRS is a VERY nice road

Its actually quite a small part about 150 houses out of 700 or more that I would avoid living by

Glad we cleared that up

Thanks Pauly and everyone Smiley
It's always nice to get a balanced view  Grin. My partner has a house in St Johns Rd, we've never had a problem there, but did look to buy in Windsor rd until we drove past one night to find a gang of 20+ hanging down the end of the road (shame the police are not more pro active). We are now looking on London rd South just past Carlton rd...is this what you would all recommend? How long would the walk to town be? Thanks everyone for being so welcome!

Denise...

Yeh...I'd say it's only the first half mile past the bridge along L R Sth...(probably the first 500yds infact..I have no idea why they crammed in so many DHSS nutjobs and chav families in that small area)

Carlton Rd seems to be the cut-off point...From there on, towards Tramways pub, everything definitely picks up...Much more 'villagey'..if you know what i mean..

Town would be about 3/4 mile away from Carlton Rd area...maybe a bit less...But up near Carlton Rd, they got a big Co-Op store...Spa...Local shops..Chemists...Cash points...etc..Everything you'd need...

Tescos/Lidls/Aldi etc..and other major stores are a bit further away..

Go Google maps, zoom right in and drag the man icon (on the left) onto where you want to look...

Thanks Paul, really appreciate that...I vaguely remember hearing alot of these people had been moved from the north, evicted or something and they had been shifted down here, the houses in Windsor Road and Cleveland road are lovely, and it is such a shame the problem isn't dealt with...but I shall shift down to the other end ~ is the beach nice further down?

Denise...

Moved here '96...(ETA..My ex-wife just told me it was '94 and "i'm an idiot"..somehow  Grin ) lived in the East End, London, all my life, until i moved to Lowestoft...

Best decision i ever made..

Couldnt take no more of London...

My kids practically grew up here...the schools are good..Public transport is so-so but totally acceptable..and the beach is just brilliant, everywhere (in the summer..but nastily cold in a normal winter)...

The summer is hot in Lowestoft...can easily go over 80f...

Compared to London...This place is safe...and street signs are only written in English...

Plus we got the yearly, proper big Airshow as well...Which is excellent for the few days its on...

Lowestoft is a nice place to live...and for kids to grow up in...

If you can get work here...Then you will be made...and you will never go back to London..especially after the first summer you spend lazing in the garden, with a BBQ going...

Re: Hi from London « Reply #31 Posted: 10 January 2012 at 05:27 PM »

I am glad you feel that way. I want out of London, and love the sea...two bonus's! I am hoping work will not be too hard to find, I am a teaching assistant, and thought I'd volunteer first and see what comes up, but obviously work is a must which makes me nervous!
Where about's do you live? My kids are 21 and 18, and not as keen now to move, especially my 18 year old ~ so I'm working on him! I will be sad to leave all my friends and my job, and worry it might get lonely up there knowing no one ~ but if I don't do it now I never will ~
How cold is it?It is mild here at 12 degrees today!

Re: Hi from London « Reply #32 Posted: 10 January 2012 at 05:46 PM »

Denise...

My daughter is 22 and and my boy is 19... and there is enough 'Night-Life' for your kids...within walking distance from where you are thinking about moving to...(plus your son gets to kick back on the hot beach, with his new friends, checking out the 'wall to wall' bikini girls for the entire summer..and every summer and only 10 minutes walk from home)..

London is only 120 miles away...a 2 and half hour drive...and there are trains direct from Liverpool St..(or change at Norwich for Lowestoft)..so it's easy to get to..

Just tell everyone..Straight up the A12 and follow the signs to Ipswich and then Lowestoft..

As for you being lonely...nah...

As for your kids being lonely...No again...They will manage...There is a vibrant night-life all along the beach area...totally geared up for that kinda age group...

As for temperature..I'm currently showing 7c outside on the street..

BTW..I'm North Lowestoft...Near the big Tescos superstore..and Aldis on the new road)

Paul

(PS...At 3am...You can go outside...and not hear a single sound...other than wildlife)

(PPS..Go Google maps...Put in Lowestoft and zoom in...then drag the little 'orange man icon' on the left....onto London Rd South/Carlton Rd..then have a drive about the streets..Check out the Lighthouse up Yarmouth Rd and the old part of town)

There are a number of people from this site, as well as Alice live in or around LRS

The winters can be cold but it is a fresh cold we dont get fog we rarely get snow or if we do it usually goes fairly quickly because of the salt air. We have very low rainfall

I wouldnt say we have a vibrant night life but there are certainly a couple of nightclubs on the sea front

You are right about the fresh air SD my head always clears once I get back away from a big city

Keep checking in...and let us know when you move up here...

You are so right when you say 'if i dont do it now..I never will'..

Your boy is borderline, fully grown 'Man'...and men step up and adapt to change...Thats what men do...

Get out of London...

Come to where the air is clean...The beaches are wide...and at 3am...you wont hear a sound outside your front door...other than Hedgehogs mating...

Just do it...

Ahhhhh they are both exaggerating Denise we dont get wall to wall sunshine of 80 degrees  but we do get a bit more than 2 days too (sometimes) We do however get different weather usually when the rest of the country is baking we are chilly and when everyone else is freezing we are having a good spell

We can however get cold winds if its lying in thee easterly direction, round here the locals call it a lazy wind cos it goes through you instead of round you, you have to realise we are at the very tip of eastern land so quite exposed

Hi, I moved from West London to North Lowestoft in September 2011, I can tell you it's the best choice you will ever make, only downside is the lack of shops, and internet speed. Smiley

I moved here from South London almost 40 years ago and never ever regretted it once. Lovely place to live. I live in Pakefield and love it here.

The weather in Lowestoft is brilliant compared to where i live and the climate is much much warmer than up here in the north.
How i dream of Lowestoft sunshine and the warm sea air..........it's so depressing living here in the north.
Anyone moving to Lowestoft need not fear the weather.  Smiley

My hubby is from Lowestoft and has family there. I adore the town my hubby moved up here with his family and when his father died his mum came back to Lowestoft but has since passed away.
I was hoping to come down in April but our daughter's baby is due around the 15th so i am not going anywhere.
My first visit to Lowestoft was the week after we married, way back in 79, and i fell in love with the town.
My dream is to live there, who knows one day maybe.  Smiley

Here, here! The hills don't help by blocking out all that very valuable and rare sunlight. A lady who lives near me is from Hethersett and gets depressed by the hills, I wouldn't go that far myself but I can see where she is coming from. Lowestoft is dry, bright and friendly and apart from that easterly wind (which we don't get up here) is usually much warmer too.
