So, which ones do you remember singing in those days?
I particularly enjoyed the “strong ones! “Eternal Father strong to save” "Guide Me Oh Thou Great Redeemer / Jehovah" "For All The Saints", “Jerusalem” - sometimes I had to play the piano for that one in Assembly when the Music Teacher was absent!
I also remember singing songs like the “Ash Grove”, “What shall we do with a drunken sailor?” and various other 'standard British songs' in our singing classes!

All things bright and beautiful and Onward Christian Soldiers were what we sang.I always loved the old hymns(nowadays the Churches seem to have new hymns that don't appeal to me).I always liked The Day thou gavest,Love Divine and Lead us Heavenly Father Lead Us-the last two being what I chose for our wedding.

Abide with me, and For those in peril on the sea, both tear jerkers for me. I loved O Jesus I have promised which had 2 different tunes and I them liked both. As far as other songs I loved the grandfather clock that stopped when the owner died, and also darling Clementine. I remember the raggedy old brown cloth covered song books at school, they were ancient and smelled a bit weird!

I had the same hymn, plus 'Crimond' for both parents cremations (they died six months apart) , and it's on the Hymn list for mine.

I don't remember many childhood hymns, but now in later life I am in my local church choir, I am enjoying all the old favorites as well as some new ones. I think my favorite is "Lord For The Years" which has a great tenor harmony. Others include "Praise My Soul" and of course "Guide Me Oh My Great Redeemer".

I was always an agnostic but have now become a devout atheist. Having said that I occasionally hear hymns on the TV which I haven't heard since we sung them at school and to my surprise I find that I quite like some of them and like Meg one of my favourites is:
O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard And hushed their raging at Thy word Who walked'st on the foaming deep And calm amidst its rage didst sleep. Oh hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea.
I think it is particularly suited to those of us who were brought up with the sea and the fishing industry. I quite like the idea of going to the Christmas midnight carol service too because it is part of Christmas and of no religious significance to me - try and unravel that one. Do I need help?

No, I don’t think you need help - I would say just go and enjoy the experience!

I questioned the Bible in RE lessons so was sent from that and other subjects where there was any religious connection so never got to sing except in music but during one school singing event my voice broke and from then on I have NEVER sung in public (and seldom elsewhere)
Much happiness abounds for all

All things bright and beautiful was a typical school Monday morning hymn designed to buck us all up. It didn't work, it was still Monday morning and I was still at school.

When my friend Shirley died they played a lot of George Strait's songs at her funeral service -it was what she requested.

When I used to go to the methodist church as a boy I can always remember singing this Hymn
We have an anchor that keeps it's hold steadfast & sure while the billows roll
We were told to emphasise some of the words but the gang off us boys at the back then got told off for almost shouting the words.

A beautiful English song by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Here’s a recording of it sung by John Shirley-Quirk (Baritone) - enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrgNI9MdKyI

Wasn't Greensleeves written by Henry VIII? The harpist at the hospital plays that for me when she comes to my room.

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greensleeves
"There is a persistent belief that Greensleeves was composed by Henry VIII for his lover and future queen consort Anne Boleyn. Boleyn allegedly rejected King Henry's attempts to seduce her and this rejection may be referred to in the song when the writer's love "cast me off discourteously". However, Henry did not compose "Greensleeves", which is probably Elizabethan in origin and is based on an Italian style of composition that did not reach England until after his death."
"Greensleeves" played on a Harp would sound really lovely!
