Songs & Hymns you sang at School/Sunday School
« Posted: 01 December 2011 at 03:54 PM »
So, which ones do you remember singing in those days?
I particularly enjoyed the “strong ones! “Eternal Father strong to save” "Guide Me Oh Thou Great Redeemer / Jehovah" "For All The Saints", “Jerusalem” - sometimes I had to play the piano for that one in Assembly when the Music Teacher was absent!
I also remember singing songs like the “Ash Grove”, “What shall we do with a drunken sailor?” and various other 'standard British songs' in our singing classes!

'Jesus wants me for a sunbeam' and 'All things bright and beautiful' are the 2 that I remember the most.

All things bright and beautiful and Onward Christian Soldiers were what we sang.I always loved the old hymns(nowadays the Churches seem to have new hymns that don't appeal to me).I always liked The Day thou gavest,Love Divine and Lead us Heavenly Father Lead Us-the last two being what I chose for our wedding.

Abide with me, and For those in peril on the sea, both tear jerkers for me. I loved O Jesus I have promised which had 2 different tunes and I them liked both.
As far as other songs I loved the grandfather clock that stopped when the owner died, and also darling Clementine. I remember the raggedy old brown cloth covered song books at school, they were ancient and smelled a bit weird!

I like Abide with Me and For those in peril on the sea.My mum used towatch a programme on Sunday evenings (I think it was called Songs of Praise) and we both used to sing along.

I had the same hymn, plus 'Crimond' for both parents cremations (they died six months apart) , and it's on the Hymn list for mine.

I don't remember many childhood hymns, but now in later life I am in my local church choir, I am enjoying all the old favorites as well as some new ones. I think my favorite is "Lord For The Years" which has a great tenor harmony. Others include "Praise My Soul" and of course "Guide Me Oh My Great Redeemer".
