I’ve downloaded “Thunderbird” email program to give it a trial. Gone through all the stages - sent my ISP password - and got back the message: “Mail server mail.plus.net responded: Login failed.” I know that the password is correct; any ideas to what I might have done wrong - and how to correct it?
Thanks

If it makes you feel any better I use Thunderbird, and often have server issues. Normally best thing to do is to restart the program. The only reason I stick with it is because it is the only email program I know that can run from a USB stick and so is portable.

Thanks Dave - I've restarted it but to no avail. I’ve uninstalled/reinstalled it - with same results. Executive decision made - I think it'll be best to stick to my existing email program! (I know - I don't have a sense of adventure!)

Can you elaborate on this JJ as in what do you mean when you say portable?
I run Windows Live Mail I also have Yahoo and Incredimail and can log in from just about anywhere there is an Internet connection (i cafe etc)

Yahoo is webmail. Incredimail and Livemail (used to be called Outlook Express) are not. Instead, they use pop-based systems also known as MIME and download your emails to your PC. These programs need installing onto your computer, and therefore cannot be easily copied across from one computer to another. It is because when installing a program certain 'bits' of the program are installed into the Windows Registry.
I have around 40 email accounts, and most of them download into my chosen email program. I do this so that I can read old emails in the future without 'needing' an internet connection. 2 years ago I decided I needed a portable solution so that when I visit my family I can still check my emails. I found that Thunderbird Portable is a smaller email program, that does not need to be 'installed', it simply operates as-is. You can copy all the program files from one computer to another and it will still work without needing installation. For ease of use, this is best done by using a USB stick as the portable device.
From bitter experience however, I would recommend against actually running the program from the stick itself. USB sticks are not designed for constant access, and they corrupt easily if you do so.

Ah I see. Though I have never had any problems reading mail any where in this country (or away for that matter) I can actually go back as far as 1973 for emails, I 'save to disc' those mails I need to keep and do so every time there is any mail which is worthy of keeping. If I am away form my laptop or even if it is broken I can access the 'disc' and all of my files as they are located on a network, I can also read my mail from that unit or even via an online reader. I may have a look at the thunderbird just to enlighten me further

Are you sure you mean 1973? The calculator was still waiting to be invented then wasn't it?

Sounds like a setup problem to me Trigger, have you double-checked all the settings?

Probably not! I followed all the on-screen “things to do” - and then tried things that I could think of - but the problem seems to be that the program cannot “connect” up with my ISP (I have verified my password). I’ve been using MS Outlook for a few weeks now but wanted to get back to a simpler program - but looks as though I’ll be staying with Outlook!

I have just reloaded/installed Windows Live Mail. A few months back it went all peculiar - and caused me problems. So that was when I switched to Outlook - but prefer "Live".
Come back Outlook Express!!

Yes I would second that idea Trigger.
I know I now use Live more than all the others I would have loved to have stayed with the original O E mail handler

I've got to ask, why you would ever need/want 40 email addresses?

Try 40+ websites. All have at least one email address attached. Although JollyJapes has its own Yahoo email address, in order to keep things streamlined.

I've used Thunderbird for my email for a long time now, so have the other 3 members of our family. It's never given me any troubles. I receive email from a couple of domains and have several email accounts on those domains. It's a superb free program. That coupled with Open Office means none of us have to inflict the bloatware that is MS Office on PCs. As a side note, Foxit Reader allows us to dump the biggest bloatware program I've encounter, considering the job it does... Acrobat Reader.
Back on topic... Your problem certainly sounds like a setup issue to me too. If you're 100% sure the password is correct, then I'd guess the username is wrong, or the server name. For example, my hosting company uses a username format that catches a lot of users out. They replace the @ symbol in the email address with a + symbol.
I can't imagine a scenario where Thunderbird would have issues collecting email, with the correct settings of course.

I've got to ask, why you would ever need/want 40 email addresses? Nikkai is correct. I have more forwarders than I can count. I set up pseudonyms/forwarders for just about every website I sign up to. These pseudonyms are forwarded to my primary email account. If I get spam on any of these addresses, I know who's responsible. I can delete the forwarder at any time, which will result in the mail being bounced back, with a 'User not known' error message. That ensures I can always unsubscribe from a site, guaranteed.
PS. Is 'Reply with quote' broken for everyone else here too?

Yes, the reply with quote broke a while back, as the site software is grossly overdue for an update.
There are problems with forwarding emails; something I come across quite often. When you want to reply to an email, it shows your primary email account name as the sender, rather than the official one you may want it to show. I dont know of any way round this whilst still using forwarders.
From what I understand, using the symbols @ and + can be interchangeable as email programs understand them both to mean the same thing. At least, that is how I understand it.

I dont know of any way round this whilst still using forwarders. You're right. If I need to use an email address I create an account for it. The forwarders are purely for sign ups, which I don't intend to reply to.

By the way, the other broken feature of this message board that ticks me off is the 'Mark all forums read'.

Paul - Thanks for your comments. I’m sure that the problem I encountered was not down to Thunderbird - though it may have come across that way in my ramblings! I did double-check my input of the details needed to for the program to contact my ISP - I even wrote it down when I made the last attempt - to make sure I got it right. It's just one of those mysteries that happen sometimes!
