On the 'Tuttles eyesore' topic on this site, one poster placed a historic buildings link (WDC). I noted with interest that this article also gave a link to job vacancies at both WDC and Suffolk Coastal offices. One in particular was for an HR (Human Resources) 'Apprentice'. (What was once described, to my mind, as an Office Junior). The job - 37 hours per week is up for grabs at a wage of £97.50 week!! Apparently this LOW wage ( around £2.60 per hour) is the recommended minimum wage for an apprentice under the age of 19!!! The job description is quite detailed and by being so I would have thought it was worth far more than the pittance offered. Is this one way of reducing council costs - by employing slave labour? I don't think they will have many takers!!! For interests sake the National Minimum wages, (Oct 2011), are:- £6.08 per hour for over 21 years old £4.98 per hour for 18 to 20 year olds £3.68 per hour for 16 to 17 year olds £2.60 per hour for apprentices under 19 years old I think the job described above should be in the top three categories at least.

maybe if they get lower wage then it made up with extra, like housing benifit tax on working clothes free travel pass to work and other odds and ends collage release days free DENTAL and opthalmic things.the desire to work. i know harping back to my day do not help and patronizing but i did only earn 12 quid a month but i got free place to live free food and uniform,the money was mine. i agree should be rewards in wanting to find work and offering a pittance for slave labour is not it

Robbie I think the apprentice job is quite different to a 'job' we have them in the NHS too and its for a fixed term say 12 months they do do all the jobs involved in being an office junior (and perhaps too much in some cases) but at the same time learning all aspects of the job with hopefully a fully paid job at the end of it for those that stick to it and do well I know we have had one in our team who now has a fulltime job and another coming up to the end and applying for a £20.000 full time post I don't think thats as terrible as it sounded. I m not advocating going backwards but apprenticeships or training schemes have always been very low paid my own son did a training scheme on next to nothing for a year but a full time job came out of it and he has never been unemployed since and has a very good job in management engineering .

this what meant on other thread reading back properly.i dont think £20.000 at all unreasonable for full time post who gone through training etc etc... the goverment and industry got to get together more and make apprenticships work

Thanks FC for your enlightening input to this topic. My immediate reaction to reading the article I mentioned was one of youngsters being offered 'apprenticeships' as a cheap form of labour.

Robbie I am not defending it entirely because like all the other past training schemes they can be exploited but if treated properly they could be a good way in to a proper job

and your point is andre,cos what i hear and see is nurses given training doing a degree then unable to see the person they trained to care for die of starvation in front of their eyes.so one person view of being treated like sh1te as was myself people did not die in their own waste and starving to death. The term treated like sh1te maybe wrong phrasing but as a apprentised person you start at the bottom accept it move on and learn the craft job what ever.aslong as nobody is rude and they make work place a fair place to work in

I think every one should start at the bottom and learn their trade on a low wage why not? In fact I think all young people who leave school should do a year volunteering to learn about the world, the less fortunate , learn the discipline of getting up each day starting at a certain time and learn how to take orders. Do no harm whatsoever

I dont see at all why having an apprentice or training wage equals being treated badly and of course they dont have to go together and shouldnt If a company doesnt treat their young workers right they probably wont treat anyone right

Wow! I don't think there should be a difference in the wages based on age. To me, a minimum wage should be the same for anyone of any age. Karen's right. If it's the same job, done to the same standards, it's indefensible to penalise someone on grounds of age - just as it is on grouds of gender.
It may be defensible to pay a younger person less IF they're slower, or IF they work to a lower standard. But if they're not it's hardly fair to pay them less just because they MIGHT still live at home with mum & dad.

>:(It is odd how some people think all workers are employed as slave labour & all bosses are receiving this huge executive type salary, most private companies at this present time are struggling to keep there staff in work, the employers suffer along with there employees when times are difficult & prosper when order books are full & my experience is that very few employers treat there work force badly. I will agree that executive's salaries that are being paid to a huge number of people is obscene to say the least and some thing must be done about it. It is rife in the great national companies, it is the same in Government & the public sector, also trade unions are not exsempt & it comes along way down the scale of employment which makes for a great divide between the haves & have nots or them & us.
