Years ago when we lived in Roman Road,my dad would insist my mum only buy sausages from Hutsons which was then in London Road South ,I think nearly opposite the old Haileys. Also the only bloaters and kippers dad would eat were from Reynolds smokehouse in Raglan street.

My Nan would only ever buy Hutsons pork chipolatis and sausages There was Kenneth Hutson as you say Meg opposite The Drifter/Haileys  there was Hodgsons butcher opposite Parrs LRS there was Whartons butchers just round the corner of Carlton Rd then there was Wilson pork butcher LRS down by Economy Rd and Goddards pork butchers LRS next to the bike shop All this is a few hundred yards - nothing now

I believe, from what I can make out, that back in the 'olden' days one had more money, and could afford to buy the better sausage.  Nowadays many people are poor, and cannot afford to go to a proper butchers, instead having to make do with supermarket own brand.

Sorry to have to disagree with you, again, but we had far far less money in the 'olden' days than even 'poor' people have today perhaps we had better priorities and no supermarkets

You are joking, of course.
More money  ??  Not even in equivalent terms.
Also, in those "olden" days there were NO supermarkets - sausages came from "proper" butchers shops.   Where else?
As for many people being poor - well yes.  After paying for their Sky TV, their I-pods, I-pads, computers, X-boxes, expensive mobile phones and contracts, several cars, smokes and drinks, foreign holidays and keeping up with the Jones' - many would not be able to afford decent sausages.
That's poverty today!  Such a shame.
