The Choir - Military Wives -Tonight on BBC2 - 9pm (Episode 1 of 3) “Choirmaster Gareth Malone believes singing can help people through the most difficult times of their lives.” He goes to a Military Base in North Devon, and - while the troops are away, Gareth hopes to start a choir with the wives and girlfriends left behind to help them through the worrying time. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0175nh5
If you haven’t seen Gareth’s programmes before - they’re certainly worth watching. It’s not so much about the singing - more about a group of people coming together and working together - and usually with interesting results.
The following link is to an archived clip from a previous series: “Unsung Town” with that choir performing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sing/choir/archive.shtml

Just finished watching The Choir. Good telly. I have seen his previous programmes, and this is as good, if not better. Singing in a local choir myself, I do get inspiration from Gareth Malone's enthusiastic approach to singing, especially "head out of books" and learn the song. Something I push with our group with mixed results!

Glad you enjoyed it, Charles. Like you I’ve seen all his programmes - and he certainly has the “gift” - can’t think of a better term! - working with people and gently encouraging / cajoling / persuading them to actually sing as themselves - and for themselves. I do believe that a good choir master is essential to a very good choir.

Yes Trigger, I agree. We have a very talented choir mistress, who trys to get the best out of us, but of course we don't have the back up of the BBC, and the draw of TV that Gareth commands. Having said that I still feel he has "the gift" as you say.

Another music programme worth watching is Imagine (BBC1 10:35 tonight) about Simon and Garfunkel, and features the making of "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" in my opinion one of the great LPs (or albums as they are called today)

I love Gareth Malone but I didnt watch it on purpose because I think these programmes can be overdone and he seems to be working through society - children, boys, people with learning difficulties, now service wives and whilst I support and enjoy the ideal I think it becomes so samey that it loses its appeal. Perhaps a year or so between them would be better but I feel I know whats coming the whole time. Its not just him it happens with so many programmes they find a formula and do it to death

Whilst I agree with the basis of what you’re saying – the last time “The Choir” format was used seems to be “Unsung Town” which was in 2009. He did do a program for singers at Glyndebourne and also an excellent one-off programme “Shanties and Sea Songs” which both were shown last year.

I'm sure you will enjoy it malcolm. I found it interesting to learn the "Behind the scenes" stories of the military families - the men preparing to go out to Afghanistan - and the families they leave behind.

Trigger there have been a number of Gareth programmes maybe some were about individual singers as opposed to choirs but they all followed the same format but I wasnt really knocking him I think hes a lovely bloke with a GREAT and I mean great teaching style and his enthusiasm and ability to think out of the box make him unique, however I do think it can go into overkill but thats only my personal feelings I would have expected me to be wanting to watch it last night but I just felt 'same again' and I think thats a shame because you are right he is well worth watching and the only thing I can put it down to is familarity too soon

I am afraid that in this household WE tend to watch the programmes that SHE wants to watch.

It's a well-known fact that it's OK to talk to yourself.
It's when you start replying to yourself that you should start worrying.

It's not so much talking to yourself - it's more asking yourself questions - e.g. "Now where did I put . . . ?" or "Where did that go - it was here just now" or "What have I come upstairs for?"

Oh. So if you were in a room with someone and they aske themselves several questions like "what did I do that for" or "I must remember where that goes" Would you be worried?
SWMBO often talks to herself and if I answer she tells me off for doing so! Should I start to worry about her?
