Telephone problem « Posted: 05 November 2011 at 01:29 PM »

Don't know if this query should be in this section but here goes.  Does anyone know anything about a technical problem with my landline phone - I have 2 landline phones but the one near my computer refuses to ring. I can make a call on it and hear calls from it but it wont ring.  I don't have the ringtone switched off - it is wierd.

Is the phone a 'wireless' one and is paired with the other phone i.e. were they a pair of phones bought as a set?

No it isn't wireless, just an ordinary landline one and not cordless.

I can only suggest that the phone has 'lost its ring' then.   Is it very old?   You could try swapping it with the phone in the other socket and see if it works in that one, and if the other phone works in the other socket as well (where the non-ringing phone is currently plugged in).  If neither phone works in one of the sockets it could be a socket problem.

BB, we have swapped the phones over and they both ring when we do that, but we prefer the smaller phone near the computer but it wont ring when it is there. It is a very old phone so perhaps we ought to get a new one.  Seems odd though that it rings when in the hall socket.

Hi just popped in to see any new item and yours caught my eye
the computer line will probably NOT have the ring circuit in the box (ADSL) does not require as it is ON ALL TIME connection if your phone is old it will need the ring line connection which is why it is not ringing next to your computer but it does in the hall.
Two or thee ways to correct this
1 have the ring line connection reinstated (may give your Internet a noisy connection so slow it down)
2 have a separate line run to the area (costly and of no real use)
3 purchase a new phone which uses a different signal to activate the ring

Ah there was I going to whip in whip out and you catch me  Grin
Thank you for asking.
Yes the visit went quite well and although I am sore I am doing very well, I have to refrain form any lifting or walking for some time until the wound heals fully but the district nurse was pleased when she inspected me the other day.
It looks like I have a lot to read through even though I have only been off a few days

Hi Nikkai

Thanks for your reply - sorry, but had visitors most of the afternoon.  Your reply is very helpful and, yes, the phone is very old so we will get a new one but how will we know if the new one will use a different signal, or are all new phones using the correct signal now?  Thanks again.

Re: Telephone problem « Reply #16 Posted: 05 November 2011 at 06:47 PM »

The new phones will analyse the signal coming into the property and if the 'chip' inside is activated then they ring where the old ones used a 36 volt pulse from the exchange to ring
you probably still have the ring line connected in the master BT socket which is why the older phone will ring when in that point.
the newer phone should ring next to your computer as it will (or should have ) the updated internal items.

Have a look on the older phone to see if there is an option for pulse or tone selection and try the tone if it has but is not set on that option.

I'm sure that's right from memory, been a long time since I did any PBX Ren work.

Believe me I'm an engineer ! Huh

Nikkai, all it has on the bottom is a ringer volume and that is set on high.

Does sound like an old pulse ring type.
do you have a newer phone that works in the computers socket?

On the newer phone is there a label denoting the type of input it will work with?

Re: Telephone problem « Reply #22 Posted: 05 November 2011 at 07:22 PM »

The phone is not that old and is fully compliant with the current telecom system
How many phones have you got plugged in around the house, you will have to include external ringers as a phone unit if you can exceed a ren of 4 then your big button "may not ring" I think you also count the BB connection as a phone.
Do you have filters in every socket or have you got the single one at master from BT?

The newer phone is the BT Big Button one and that rings OK next to the computer.  It is the old phone that doesn't. Yes, we have a filter in every socket. We only have the 2 phones and the BB connection.

Re: Telephone problem « Reply #26 Posted: 05 November 2011 at 07:58 PM »

Oh I see what you mean when you say it is old  crybaby2
It is a 1 ren phone but it could even be that some of the internal parts are not at their best.
If you left the 'big button' phone out does the 'old' one ring then it would just prove that there is too much draw on the signal from exchange so the weakest chip will ignore any signals
You could put an external ringer in an extension plug to get a ring where you are
(not saying it will work) but it may

Tried it by unplugging the Big Button one in the hall but the 'old' phone next to the computer still didn't ring.

Oh Nikkai, thank you so much for trying to solve the mystery - now go and lie down in a dark room! OH is going to risk getting a newer phone anyway and see what happens then.  I'll let you know if we overcome the problem.  Thank you once again for your help.
