Some advice please, before I go and throw my PC over the side of the bridge . . . was online today (on this site) - so that was open. I also had Word open as I was writing a piece for posting. Then suddenly the screen went black for a few seconds - then a blue screen (reminiscent of the “Blue screen of death”!) appeared. I jotted down some of the info on screen:
It was headed “Error Screen” - with advice: If this is the first time this has happened - reboot.
It went on to say: Check for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing The last line was: Tech Info STOP: 0x0000007E
Seriously beginning to think it’s time to treat myself to an Apple

Thanks Meryl - had tried that also - and ended up none the wiser! Perahps it's time for a PC MOT!! I'll keep a diary of any little quirks of whatever they're called . . . and see how it goes.

Found a bit more info on this “message” from Wikipedia Link - “Stop errors are hardware or driver related, causing the computer to stop responding in order to prevent damage to the hardware or data.”
So, from what I’ve read in that article - it could be that this “message” helped prevent the computer from “crashing”. Methinks steps need to be taken!

Last service pack (W7) received 23 February - and there aren't any other updates to that.
My PC seems to have occasional "problems"! Soon after installing W7 kept getting a message that it was an illegal copy. Phoned MS (call cost £3!) to eventually be told it was a legal copy - and they didn't know why it happened. Recently been getting a "Close everything - low on memory" messages - but that's now stopped! I wait with bated breath for the next "problem" to pop up!

Hi Trigger, what operating system are you using?
XP? Windows 7? Linux?
Updates can be very important for the smooth running of the computer operating system
If you have a search box on the start menu type in 'windows updates' and check for updates. Could be that there is a newer version to correct an update that might not have worked originally.
If you have windows 7 there is a little white flag icon bottom right of the screen (could be hidden but can be revealed by clicking on the arrow in same place) this gives computer problems and will help you fix them.

Thanks BJ!
My OS is Windows 7 - and it’s automatically updated. My last reply was as a result of checking through all the updates received since I installed W7. As I said in that post - I begin to think my PC sends out these messages occasionally - just to keep me on my toes! At the moment it’s working OK (fingers crossed!).

I m on windows 7 and my little white flag is:- right hand bottom corner where the time is, you should have a little upward arrow click on that and you will have a little screen come up with 9 icons on one of them is the elusive 'little white flag'

bushwacker:
Click on the upward arrow - and a small screen pops up - with some icons. Below where the icons are is "Customise" (in blue). Click on that and another screen open headed: "Select which Icons appear on the task bar".
The first one on mine is "Action Centre" and to the right of that is a panel marked "Show icon and notifications". Click on that if you want to change it - there's two other choices.

MAC OS X is boring
No error messages No blue screens No white flags
I must write to Apple and ask when I am going to get all these extras that Microsoft seem to supply.
