Cut and paste « Posted: 31 October 2011 at 07:55 AM »

Lately a few people have commented on the 'links and cut and paste' getting out of proportion

I think it is a really useful facility if you want to prove a point or guide people to reading more than you can write especially links as you can choose to read or not,  but somtimes there are pages and pages of cut and paste We are all busy people who watch the news on TV, listen to the radio, read papers and catch up with the latest on line Do we need more? What do you think? Is it in danger of making LOL boring ?

Can I just offer an explanation about the “posting of links” to articles - but I must stress that this is my own view and not necessarily the view of this site.

If anyone is posting, say, a quote from a newspaper article, the matter of copyright comes up.  Reading our Forum Rules it states: “In the case of publishing material that is under copyright of someone other than yourself, you are required to post a source, and if possible, a URL to where it can be found online.”

Whilst I can understand that seeing a “Link” to an article - which is already quoted from - might seem unecessary, it is done for a reason, so that the original article can be easily found, should anyone wish to check it.

Trigger I dont think its the links that are annoying people they are as you say necessary for copyright and also give you a choice to ignore them if you want to. My thoughts were much more about the cut and paste which again can be useful here and there, but when you get pages and pages of it without taking a breath to even allow comments  this can be a real put off, well to me anyway. Who knows everyone may prove me wrong and like seeing it- lets see

I posted my comment about "Links" - as it has been raised twice very recently.  I have simply offered it to try and clarify the situation concerning their usage.

I think you are right to make that point Trigger and thank you I m not trying to be mischeivous here but have heard it from a few different directionslately  and I found it shocking today to hear that a much respected poster was feeling they would leave and partly due to these changes in LOL and that made me think it was well worth discussing

My vote was yes, there's too much of of it.

I've been at this site for quite a long time.  Probably on and off for ten years.  Seen lots of changes and people that come and go.  Many are sorely missed.  The site has changed, but then everything does, but for me personally, it's not the same fun place it used to be to visit.  I find myself skipping over the majority of the stuff and just look at a couple of the topics nowadays.

One feature that I wish would come back is the chat room.  It was a lot of fun and a good laugh, but more than that, I think it brought a lot of members together from all over the place and we formed some good friendships.  It made us feel like we all knew each other  and many of us actually did get to meet up.  I know that I looked forward to chatting to someone pretty much any day I got onto the computer.

Karen - re: chat room.  I think this isn't possbile now - could be to do with this being an "old" program.  I'll see if I can find out anything for you.

I gave my views on this the other day, but will the perpetrators take any notice of a poll?  Of course they won't.

I am on record that can be seen in my posts of complaining about lincs, lincs, lincs. I have begun to ignore most posts that have them but just a few are useful for people to read. The posts I am particularly ignoring are those that are being used in stead of that peron putting forward his/her own thoughts to the debate.

Re: Cut and paste « Reply #13 Posted: 01 November 2011 at 06:46 AM »

Excuse me A M I havent mentioned anything about a chat room in any of my posts so where did that accusation come from?  so take that argument up with the poster not me

I mentioned the word links because the person who has left said 'because of the links and cut and paste' but if you read my post before jumping on my words you will see where I implied links can be valuable and not intrusive as you can choose whether to read them or not however the title cut and paste referred to the copious amount of cut and pase that has been appearing lately, sometimes pages of it and there is no time to comment on one item before another two or three articles have been pasted - now is that you I am referring to? - no I dont think so I havent noticed you doing any cutting and pasting

You seem to get great pleasure in arguing for the sake of it  and  manage to twist posts round to suit your  agenda which I personally find unpleasant

I am beginning to feel uncomfortable in your presence Andre M , I feel that anything that I might say is unworthy .

Perhaps you should have made your point  to FC a bit clearer, so that we lesser mortals would understand it.

I am not asking you to have a go, merely stating how I feel, and I don't need telling by you or anyone else   that I am allowed to state that.

It's me that brought up the chat room, not FC.  Sorry that I mentioned something in my post that was not in the title of the thread.  Shame on me!

This site has seen a lot of changes in attitude and people have come and gone, which is bound to happen over time.  Many have cut down their visits to the site and quite frankly, I'm surprised that there are that many left at all.   We used to have our heated debates, but they were soon over.  We learned to agree to disagree.  Now there just seems to be the need to push certain buttons and force certain views and being argumentative over just about every topic.

Didn't know we used to have a 'Chat' room on here.  Why don't we have it any longer? It would be good.

Written words are emotionless, so they often looks harder  than they are intended,
Say your opinion, but remember that it is your own opinion and other people may think differently than you ...
If you enter with these thoughts a discussion , it remains fun for everyone,
is not really that hard ... Wink

And a chat room .... is good for social networking ... I support  Grin

Re: Cut and paste « Reply #27 Posted: 02 November 2011 at 12:14 AM »

Anyway, back to "cut and paste", I see no problem in adding some text to give the reader a taster of what the link is about but to virtually paste the entire contents of the link seems pointless, I end up reading the text and ignoring the link because there can't be much more in it than what I have just read. Also I consider some of the stuff on here as spamming, such as JJ's God section, I know I have the choice not to read it and mostly I do ignore it but to me it feels the same as the junk mail I find on my doormat every morning.
