Peter Aldous worries about sea gulls. « Posted: 26 October 2011 at 10:10 AM »

Apparently despite the global economic crisis, the problems affecting Lowestoft businesses, the crime figures etc etc etc.The invisible man has devoted his attentions to the seagull population.Oddly enough I'd expect seagulls at the seaside,I think the clue is in the name SEAgulls.
Other than that I can't remember him actually doing anything.Do you think he's got his priorites right?.

Also I think the seagull population has been in decline over the past few decades, some have declined by 50%. and some are protected I don’t think there is no where near as many about the town as there was when the Fishing fleet was here!  evil6

Perhaps Mr Bean Aldous could borrow this sign from Aldburgh,I'm amazed anyone feeds the gulls there anyway given the price of the chips and ice cream.

Mr Bean evil6 If you got rid of them from jeld wen site all they would do is move on to somewhere else in Lowestoft. Its a seaside town and i think seeing the gulls is fine and if you get S**T on by one, its meant to be lucky. How that came about i will never know Roll Eyes

At least sea gulls don't pile up rubbish ever day at the alley behind the tuttles ancient ruin or leave nappies, poo, toiet paper and half eaten takeaways on the beach.Perhaps if humans spent more time clearing up their rubbish there'd be less for seagulls to pull about, and Aldous can get back to more serious issues.

I think Aldous is under the impression that this silly crusade will give him  a few brownie points with his constituents. That would only be true if he was representing the wishes of the majority, sadly he's so out of touch he probably thinks he is.
Every year I rescue a fair number of young gulls that have fell off the roofs near me and return them via the fire escapes. The parents often bombard me as I do so and spend the rest of the year doing it to my car. They're still Gods creatures with as much right to live here as I have.
I often feed the birds round here and one big seagull is a regular visitor he (or she) has a distinctive mark on its head and a rather agresive attitude to the other gulls.I often look at it and envy its ability to fly unhindered above the town and to know what freedom really means.

Well said all, this country is in a big mess and all he can think of is culling seagulls (this is a fancy word for killing),who are less trouble than any MP fiddling their expenses, and using tax payers money for jaunts

Well if nothing else this has got Peter Aldous a bit of publicity.  Now he's in the public eye a bit he may not feel so invisible?  But I agree this is a daft cause.

Just as an aside - I was amused by the photo accompanying the article in the Journal which shows two birds - a gull and a . . . penguin. I assume that they weren’t photographed together in Lowestoft! Link

Sounds as if he does n't know much about anything ,well anything really important .
No Seagulls in a seaside !.........he's off his head.Put him on one of the Islands off the coast that are Gull reserves and maybe he'll change his tiny mind about the those that live in Lowestoft .
When I was in Lowestoft a few weeks ago I was surprised how few Gulls of any sort there are around the town Shocked

So what was Blizzards view on the gulls out of interest? didn't he have similar sentiments?

It's true the bigger picture is that our seabirds in general are having a very hard time. On Orfordness each year the breeding suscess and the numbers attempting to breed fall due to heavy predation by foxes, a lot of these birds would naturally breed on beaches but these are too disturbed by people/dog walkers etc... the only peaceful places for them to go is on rooftops, so they will do what comes naturally, set up their nests, make noises at all hours of daylight just like they would on their breeding grounds.

I find it ironic that humans which have caused this roof nesting phenomenon with their own recreational habits and excessive population growth all of a sudden start blaming the gulls!

Do gulls have a use or purpose in this world?
All they seem to do is make a mess and be a nuisance.
No need to get rid of them all, but surely it's sensible to control their numbers in towns?

Same applies to humans - well all living things if that's the case, in fact what's the point of the whole universe?!

ASK HIM icon_scratch might be a good suggestion

Surely if gulls did not have a purpose they would not have survived all those millions of years?? Maybe they are just doing what we are doing adapting and becoming lazy. Why should they go out to sea and hunt, if their is a half eaten sandwich in front of them?? We are making it easier for them in a way. They are more intelligent than us.

Well 728 s got a good point if there wasnt so much food waste lying aroud they would be more likely to go out to sea looking for their dinner Of course the lack of fishing boats doesnt help any

Ah but he has won the candidate Tongue and he still has a website with an email James. Smiley In a way by not dropping food waste they would go out to sea, well they would have to otherwise they would get a bit hungry.   Smiley

I think stopping waste and litter being dropped to discourage the gulls would be the modern equivalent to finding the holy grail.

There are countries where there is little litter and even some towns in the UK.The one thing they share in common is that people caught dropping it are heavily fined.
In this town litter bugs simply get away with it.Half the litter blowing round the town, which the cleaners clear up everyday at vast expense and for little appreciation is the result of the seagulls tearing open the flimsy plastic bags supplied by Waveney Norse etc that contains food waste amongst other things.
One thing Bob B did have strong opinions on was litter,a pity its not shared by Waveney Norse who then might come up with a different way to collect rubbish, other than doing it as cheaply and as messily as now.
WDC have the lowest rate of prosecutions for litter bugs,I have the figures somewhere I 'll try and find them up.
There you go Mr Aldous,do something usefull, raise that in parliament.,Bob did.

Having walked through the town yesterday, seeing drunken foul mouthed low life filling the pavements, and another begging outside the post office after getting his money supplied by the workers, give me the seagulls anyday.Yes they are aggressive, but only protecting the young(pity more humans weren't like that)and yes I have had a little luck from them and dirty windows but they have a right to life.
