They don't tell you - or even warn you, Meryl. It's only when you arrive home late - or look out of the window - as I did this morning @ 4am (the wee small hours) that you realise - it's dark out there!

Each time a new part of the town was due to be switched off I put a reminder on the other thread, I haven't checked lately but i have a hunch a large part of south Lowestoft was due to go over on Oct 24th, last Monday, but this time around i didn't think or couldn't be bothered to update that thread!

We had a notice put in our door by the police this afternoon about house and car burglaries in the area. One of the tips they gave about car burglary was to park your car in a well-lit area - that's a laugh, seeing as our area will be losing street lighting for most of the night. Woops, just seen your post about this Meryl.

They say the dog is man's best friend. I don't believe it - how many of your friends would you neuter?

In my road its so dark even the criminals would have trouble seeing what they were doing, if they used a torch maybe not but that would draw attention to themselves. They would only get found out if someone was looking out of their window at the time, streetlights or no streetlights. Most of the night crimes reported in the journal still have reported times of occurance when the lights are still on.

I read reports that crime actually went down in areas where its been tried as you are much more likely to see a torch than if they were seen walking around I dont have any links at my finger tips but I ll see if I can find one

Careful what you say Meryl, many here said it was a good idea!
Best you read Dimming/switching off Lowestoft's Streetlights on this site!
just read it and I don't feel that anyone was particularly for it. Actually I didn't say that I was against it merely pointed out the irony of the leaflet.

When I was a child the street lights in our street in Liverpool were gas lights. I guess they must have been similar in Lowestoft

I don't remember lights at all during the war but remember the gas lighter after the war as in the above post.

This is a Liverpool picture from 1953. It's not my picture so thank you to the person who it belongs to. I remember climbing up the lamp posts like that.
