starting a family tree
« Posted: 24 October 2011 at 01:17 AM »
I have been thinking about starting a familly tree and have probably asked this quetion before in this forum but as usuall never got around to starting one probably because i live in the states and all of my family is from England, so which British website would you recommend for a beginner who wants to go back as far as he can and how much would it cost me, any information would be a great help for me.
Thanks smileyt.

Gosh there re so many there are sites to pay for searches and free sites I would make a start by talking to as many family members alive as poss you can usually go back one two or three generations that way gather up every bit of info even stuff that seems small as you will never know when those little clues will come in handy Remember its all like a giant jigsaw When you have exhausted that supply I would start with the free websites If your family is from Suffolk ( presumable) with you being on here there is a good free one called
www.uk.surnames.com
The mormon site
www.familysearch.org/england
is very good too Genes reunited it great as you draw your whole tree on there as you go and they will link you up with othersthat may be connected If you put a search in for Suffolk geneaology you will get dozens and dozens and you will fid your own favourites
I went back to 1675 but got stuck there and I did it all before I had a computer just through libraries and books ( the hard way) Remember it is time consuing and VERY VERY addictive

If I can just add to what funkychick has just said...
www.ancestry.com
...
www.findmypast.com
...and
www.GenesReunited.com
are very good sites to get you started.
In some cases Parish Registers and old newspapers are an excellent source of information....over the years I've visited many churchyards to glean information for the family trees I research, but as you can't do this, a respectful letter to the incumbent vicar of a parish for any details of births etc. might prove very useful.
You can get free basic information off most of these sites but for more in depth information you need to pay a subscription - please be warned that this can turn out to be very expensive ....also the cost of certificates to verify your findings is not cheap when you need to obtain so many.
It's very important that you verify all of your findings as it's all too easy to assume you've got the correct person or family.
You forgot the .com after the second two Dorothy Ann, so admin has inserted them therwise the links don't work.

Good luck with your “hunting”. As has been said - it’s a very big subject - and can seem a never-ending search. And be aware that you will come up against a number of “brick walls” (dead ends) where progress seems impossible. Another important fact that I learned was not to assume that a name you come across is definitely “your” relative - it’s easy to jump to the wrong conclusion. I found, when searching using an appropriate online site that sometimes you enter the full name of a relative and other relevant details - and nothing comes up. Yet by searching using first name + surname, you might have a long list of names - but by carefully checking through all those names - you will probably find the want you want.
There is a free site of Births, Marriages & Deaths -
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
which I found useful - although you do have to get used to using - it isn’t straight-forward! If there are any Lowestoft deceased family members of long ago and want to check their burial details - the Lowestoft Cemetery records are at
www.waveney.gov.uk

I belong to 3 or 4 free genealogy forums and have been doing my tree for about 3 years now - found out loads, including a few skeletons in cupboards, including a murderer and a couple of bigamists (lovely family)! If you join a forum on the pc, there are loads of helpful folk on them who will help you and do look-ups for you. RootsChat is a good forum, also Family Tree Forum and Genealogy Forum. I will send you the links if you are interested.

I take it that your family doesn't originate from Lowestoft smileyt, because if they did you could name names to see if anyone recognised them. You could also do that anyway someone might come across them as they plough through the sites seeking their own families.

Hi Smiley - just one thing to add to the very good advice. If you Google "Legacy free download" you will get a free and NON spamming programme family tree that makes life much easier (courtesy of the Mormon site already mentioned and very useful indeed). You start with putting your own name in and the rest just follows. If you pay for a programme my favourite is Family Tree because it quite often "recognises" an entry and tells you other researchers/family trees/records where the relatives of that person can be found. But hard luck if your name is Smith!!!! Good luck
