Phone calls from Microsoft (?)
« Posted: 20 October 2011 at 01:04 PM »
This post could have been placed in several different forums as it concerns, I think, nuisance calls. About an hour ago I received a call from a lady saying she was speaking on behalf of Microsoft and that they had received a number of error messages from my computer. These, she claimed, suggested that I had some mailcious viruses etc on my computer and would I mind turning it on so that she could guide me through a process to sort it all out. We receive many nuisance calls and, like many other people I dare say, I nearly put the phone down as soon as I heard the American/Asian accent. That accent usually precedes someone trying to sell me something, what would have happened if I'd let her into my computer I dread to think. As soon as I said I wasn't interested she put the phone down, not the reaction from someone representing Microsoft I'm sure. Nobody needs me to warn them of these type of calls I know, we're all wise to them nowadays, but one second not being on your guard could cause a whole host of problems.

A timely reminder! Always remember that these callers cannot tell you anything about your computer - the last time I had such a call I "led them on" a bit! Telling the guy I thought it was wonderful that he could tell me about problems on my computer - especially as it's switched off!
Please note: If the caller says he is from Microsoft, or a MS authorised company -
Remember: Microsoft will not phone you personally !

One good thing though, funkychick and Trigger, it's made me do a scan, just in case.

So the call has had an effect on you - you are doing a scan - but why? If you hadn't received that call you wouldn't be running a scan! So why do one just because of a scam phone call?
Just started a scan (using Kaspersky) - just to see how long that takes!

The scan reports no problems on the computer Trigger, but apparently I have an ingrowing toenail and a boil where I need a mirror to see it. Blooming clever these computers.

Since starting these scans, according to Reuters, Gadaffi has been found, dead apparently. AVG rules.
