Are you an ex-Lowestoftian?
« Posted: 12 October 2011 at 10:00 PM »
We’ve had a suggestion from “frankiesays” - an ex-Lowestoftian, for a “thread” for other “ex-locals“ to tell us a bit about themselves, where they were living in Lowestoft , why they left, and where they live now. Of course, it can also work in reverse - for those who have moved here from other areas, and how they’ve got on living here.
Obviously, we ask that you take care in telling your “story” and not give out too much personal information!
So, tell us about yourselves . . .

I'll start the ball rolling! It was 1958 when I met my husband Bob on Pier Terrace.I was working at Jewson's at the time and I went to Waller's on Pier Terrace to get food for our tea break.Bob was with another American who I knew.We chatted briefly. That afternoon my friend Wendy and I were on the sea front when we met the Americans again.Bob asked me to go to the movies that evening and we went to the Palace. He stayed at the Globe in for several weeks when he came down to see me.We met in May,got engaged in August and married in January 1959.We lived at RAF Sculthorpe until January 1961 when we came to the States to Shaw AFB,South Carolina where Michelle was born later that year.We went back to England in 1963-1967,then we were transferred to Loring AFB,Maine. From there Bob went to Da Nang ,Vietnam and Michelle and I went to Lowestoft and stayed with my parents until we returned to the States.I worked in the Office at Bally Shoe factory while we were in Lowestoft. We came to Tinker AFB,Oklahoma in 1971from there we went to Wiesbaden,Germany and then Kaiserslautern,Germany. We came back to Tinker in 1977 and Bob retired from the Air Force. We went back to England for vacation every other year(we went to visit Bob's family in North Carolina the other years). We have lived here in Oklahoma since Bob retired. He went to work for the US Postal Service and retired from there in April 1998.Michelle still works for the US Postal Service and lives in Edmond Oklahoma-she works at the Post Office where the massacre was in the 80's.Here endeth my epistle!!!

It would be nice to see some pictures of the area that you live in Meg. I didn't realise you had been in the US for so long.

I would imagine it is to show that you actually made a post at that point in time in case there is a dispute over something. A record that you were actually online on this site at that time.
Total deletion is down to admin and mods.

I'm one of those who moved here from another area. I moved here from South London nearly 40 years ago. How this came about is that I met my husband in South London when he was working there. He came from Lowestoft. We started 'courting' and he brought me here to meet his family. I loved it here, we got engaged, moved here and then married. Unfortunately he died 3 years later but no way did I want to return to London because I loved Lowestoft (still do) and had a young son by then. I have since remarried.

How sad that your husband died so soon after bringing you here but lovely that you were settled and like it enough to stay. I have relatives from West London who come up each year and they love it and are always amazed by the beach and the house prices, but because they are all tied to London with employment they cant move but they always say they would like to. Glad your story had a happy ending

Born in Lowestoft - lived in Pakefield 1950-62

For myself. I was born in Lowestoft in 1950, although my family originated in London. My parents met whilst my dad was serving in the navy and attached to HMS Europa (Sparrows Nest). They married and settled in Pakefield where I spent my first 11 years. We moved in 1961 to Hertfordshire to be near the rest of my dad's family, and improve our living standards. Dad worked for Newson's boatbuilders in Oulton Broad, and, although a skillful job, the income was not enough to pay our way, which eventually effected his health. So he went back to his old trade as a painter and decorater in Hemel Hempstead, with an imediate improvement to his income. After school I was taken on as an apprentice with the GPO (now BT). When I married I moved to Buckinghamshire, my present location. After 34 years with BT I took early retirement and now work part time as an extra in the film and TV industry. I like to visit Lowestoft as often as I can. I still love the place, and my older brother and family are still there.

I was born in Long Road opposite the middle of the old golf course in 1953 - we were all born at home mostly in those days. I went to Pakefield Primary and then on to Alderman Woodrow school. I became an apprentice compositor at Clowes in Beccles and came out of my time in 1976 and immediately got married (far too soon) and had two children.
I did a disco at the King Alfred in OB with my friend Malcom McGrory (now living in the US I believe) 4/5 nights a week for 18 months mainly through 1976. I worked at Broadland Chalets for 11 years and when it was sold was site manager for a year, I then got into IT and also did the odd DJ'ing spot at the Claremont and a few mediaeval banquets at Bungay. I worked from London selling epos systems for a while but still lived in Lowestoft at weekends. Finally work took me away to Cumbria and now North Lancashire where I have been for the last 18 years (Carnforth). First I was IT Controller at a chain of convenience stores and then when that business changed hands moved into selling IT into the logistics business. I married again and have four more children - I have found out what the problem was and had it fixed now. So at the ripe old age of 58 I still have 4 children in full time education. I now work for a company in Oxfordshire but work from home, I sell automation to warehouses and specialise if voice directed work.
I used to come back to Beccles regularly to see my parents who have both unfortunately died in the last two years, my visits are more rare now although I still have a sister in Beccles and my two older offspring both live near Norwich. My oldest daughter works for what was Norwich Union and my son for a company that investigates complaints against the NHS (or something like that) he also runs these extreme fitness courses in the evenings.
I'll tell you a bit more about where I live in future posts but the parallels are uncanny, an old victorian coastal resort which is now becoming a bit run-down, a town split by a river with only two bridges and gridlocked every day. A rail station that has been moved by a few hundred yards because it was more convenient, the old station is now a music venue and the new station has no roof. There is a theatre that has been rebuilt but is struggling. Sound familiar? Yet around 380 miles away from LT. It's very nice here but I'd be very happy to "come home".
