Memories. Do you remember.......? « Posted: 11 October 2011 at 07:11 AM »

I was reminiscing with a friend and we remembered  the poppet beads that were once all the rage, I had them in all different colours . What do you remember that were once important to you but have now disappeared into obscurity?...

Pacers!

Green and white striped chewy spearmint sweets from the 80's.
Like a minty opal fruit.

Now I m going to show my age,- petticoats that we used to soak in gum arabic from the pharmacy which was then called a chemist to make them stiff we then wore about 6-8 layers so that when you spun round in rock and roll dances your skirt went whizzing

Lying in a bath of water to make jeans shrink tightly, no ready bought skinnies then - but we made 'em so

I got pocket money every Friday, then I went on my bike into town,
I bought a single ( 45 record ? ) , usually the number one in the top 40 ,
quickly cycle back home and listen to it.....

every Saturday I got the "Smash Hits" , an English popmagazine.
(This way I began to read English  Wink )

So I was never bored in the weekends  with my magazines and my records

Do you remember how much those 45 rpm records cost you, Corine?

I remember when I started buying them in the early 1960's they were 6/8d  (six shillings and eight pence)  That was of course before the UK went decimal and is the equivalent of £0.33 in today's money or, to you Corine  €0.29.

Listening to junior choice on Saturday mornings with Ed stewpot Stewart. Great mixture of pop music and silly kids songs. I loved the one about the men digging a hole and the man in the bowler hat told them it should be square so they buried him in it. And the ugly duckling song mad me cry.

My first single  ( 45 rpm ) was HLF 2,50 ( That is in Euro-coins €1, 15 ) in the early 80-ties
But I also paid HLF 4,95 Few Years later (  Euro €2,25 ) Late 80-ties

I think it was more expensive in the Netherlands dan in England ,
My dad always bought his records en music-tapes in England when we were on Holiday,
much cheaper  Wink

Talking about records did anyone else remember going into Morlings and asking for your favourite record to be played while you stood in a booth with headphones on, thats what we did of a Saturday afternoon. You didnt have to buy anything just listen to them.

Also listeing to Radio Luxemberg and Radio Caroline under my sheets (No duvets then)

That all sounds so familiar, FC.   Radio Luxembourg at 11pm Sunday night.   The Top 20 with "This is your DJ - BA Barry Aldis"  Have a look at this link:  http://www.offringa.nl/radioluxembourg.htm

I see that link above originates from The Netherlands.

I think all record shops used to play you records in booths.  I was of course in Liverpool those days and we used to go into a shop called NEMS (the acronym for North End Music Stores) which was owned by Brian Epstein, The Beatles manager.
