Photos of Old Lowestoft
« Posted: 11 October 2011 at 01:12 AM »
As a local and family historian for about 40 years, I am searching for photos of old Lowestoft of the Victorian to early Edwardian era, especially scenes of Kirkley, Kirkley Cliff, South Beach, Lowestoft Bridge, Lowestoft town centre, High Street, Lowestoft Lighthouse and the Ravine area. Because there are so many images of old Lowestoft scattered about I am in the process of collecting as many copies as I can so as to bring them together as a collective lot for cataloguing. When completed the collection will be recorded onto a CD that will be given to the local record office in Lowestoft for future research and future generations to enjoy.
If you can help with this project and are willing to send copies as attachments to my email address, please send them to

.
Thanks.
Ron.

This is a very good idea. I hope a book (or the CD) with your results will be sold to the public as well. Or that they'll be put online. Good luck with your search.

Yes, I have considered that possibility, but I shall have to wait until all the images have been collated and logged. It's obviously going to take at least a year or so for the project, perhaps even longer.
Being an artist, I also plan to create drawings and possibly watercolours of Lowestoft scenes before the days of photography based on written descriptions and old maps from the early 1800s or even the 1700s.

I always see those 'local' books in newsagents with lots of old pictures of Lowestoft/Oulton Broad etc, perhaps you could buy one of those and contact whoever made them? I'm sure they'll have contact details on them somewhere.
You should be able to find them in the Spar shop in Pakefield, thats where I always spot them on the counter

I'm already pursuing that path. Thanks for the thought.
