Has anybody else noticed how much better Kensington Gardens are looking at the moment.
How lovely to see something improving so much.

Looks great not far from where i live and love walking in there. The only thing i miss is the birds and budgies but i can understand why they had to go but they were great with tourists. Nice to see the park looking good.

It's great to see it looking almost like it did when I was young, except now there are canoes instead of the electric boats.

Yes it was Meryl - such a shame.  I used to always go and take a look at the aviary.

If I remember rightly, some sicko not only vandalised the bird enclosure, but also set fire to it!

The electric boats were before my time, but where were they? were they where the boating pond is now?

Are you sure it was bigger? Or were you just smaller? I thought it was exactly the same size but with a couple of islands in the middle so there were a variety of "circuits" you could take. It had a wire netting roof in those days too for the electric.

It’s rather similar to a comment made by my paternal Grandfather many years ago.  We took him around the area where he was born (near Bressingham) and places he knew as a child (he left that area aged 14).  This included a stop at Diss - a wander around the town and a stop at Diss Mere Link - which is a large area of water - and his reaction?  “It was much bigger when I used to play here”, he said!  Smiley

Yes The boats were great and with the bushes on the island when you knew your time was nearly up you started hovering around behind the islands to get 5 mins longer There was an old guy in big thigh high waders in the water getting you in and out and often there would be little sparks fly off the electric pole The man had little brass keys that went on the same number on a board in front of him so he could calculate who was coming in next etc and he had a megaphone .

Kensington Gardens seemed huge to me then and when I was very little I used to worry I d get lost. There was a few Wendy houses dotted around one on the seaside corner near St Marys. My Nan used to take me there for a little picnic after school, and we'd sit in the Wendy House to get out of the wind, there was another on the bottom level sort of under the tennis courts, that was where I would have kisses and cuddles when I got older, but you had to keep out of the way of the park keeper who walked around in uniform with a little cane under his arm I think I have some boat pics taken around 70's I ll look them out tonight

I used to go to that park and feed the squirrels when I parked up at Gants hill to get the underground into town. Nice park as I recall.

I also remember the boats with great affection. A must visit when wandering down at the weekends with my parents. I have a few faded photos somewhere. Thanks for jogging my memeory FC, I had forgotten about the brass tags and the man in waders.
