Had a Windows message suddenly appear a short while ago: “Close programs to prevent information loss.  Your computer is low on memory.   Save your files and close these programs:

Internet Explorer, Windows Live Mail.

Only had one other page open (BBC News).  I had a similar message about a week ago.

Any ideas what could cause this? I have “1792 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory”.  Could this message be  to do with RAM - and, if so, what is the likely cause?

Trigger, I have had that happen in the past.  When you say “1792 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory” what is your total RAM?  2GB, 3GB or more?   It depends on what is 'left available' when the message shows.  Have you checked the Task Manager (as shown - this is Vista)  The bottom graph shows I am using 1.88GB out of 3. 

It  has never really given me a problem in the past.   Perhaps there is something else running in the background  - look under the Processes tab in the Task Manager.  That shows how much memory each process is using.

Other than that, perhaps your computer has amnesia.   Grin

sorry trigger looks like you have a bug. try downloading microsoft malicious software tool and save to your desktop run full scan see if this works for you.

Installed Memory (RAM): 2.00 GB (1.75 GB usable)
With an AMD Phenom(TM) 9150e Quad-Core Processor 1.80 GHz
Would it be worth my while to add another "unit" of RAM?

Barry - thanks for suggestion - I do have a MS version of this tool which runs in the background.  I have just run their MS Safety Scanner:  “Completed successfully - no nasties were found. I also run Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 2011.

Trigger, I think you need to wait to see if you get the low memory message again and see what the memory status is in the Task Manager then.  If the figure is very high compared to the 830MB shown in your screen dump above (i.e. nearer 1500MB or even higher) check what processes are running and make a note of any that are using a lot of memory and determine what they are and why they are running.   If necessary do a screen dump of them and send it to me in an email.  I will look at it as soon as I can and see if I can come up with any answers.

Do you have windows automatic updates turned on? If you do, it's perfectly possible to have a brief memory issue - if the BBC page had a video file, your computer could have been caching it, ready for replay, maybe you'd also been doing some cutting and pasting? Who knows.

If the message doesn't appear every session, I'd forget all about it - sometimes websites are very annoying - and their design isn't memory friendly - especially those ones with lots of video windows - you know the ones where even though you've not clicked play, the progress bar starts to move - signifying you're downloading, ready - just in case.

The odd message of this kind isn't important - as long as you don't run short of memory frequently.
