Charity Begins at Home « Posted: 03 October 2011 at 11:52 AM »

When I went to the post office the other week, they asked if I would like to purchase a raffle ticket in aid of Banardo's,this I did, I'm no gambler, but I will do for a good local cause.I was most surprised to be told I had won.The prize donated by the Hollywood cinema for tickets to the cinema. I tried ringing several charities to see if they could make use of them or knew of a needy family, to no avail.I then rang the Salvation Army who said they knew of several families where the children have very few essentials let, alone treats,so I sent the tickets to them.I have received a very nice thankyou letter and stating that it will be very gratefully received by a local family. So by helping one charity get funds I have helped a local family.Life is all about helping people along the way,and to me knowing some children will enjoy themselves is like, what I imagine winning the lottery would be, if I did it.Like me perhaps the Salvation Army is not always the first thought, but they do no end of good work, worth remembering when you have something, that someone less fortunate might benefit from.So its Monday and I'm chuffed.

Be very proud of yourself - and you deserve to feel chuffed - even though it’s Monday!  Just think of the pleasure that simple act of kindness will have given to that family.

What a nice thing to do,Jane.Well done you!We always donate our st uff that is no longer needed to the Salvation Army. They are always prompt with their pickups and some of the other charities are a bit particular about what they will or won't take.

I donate to a small local shop run by volunteers and the money raised goes to local hospital volunteer programs. They are always very grateful for good second hand items.
Bob won cinema tickets too recently and we gave those away to some children so great minds think alike Jane.
A lot of people here in Vermont are in need of clothes, appliances and furniture due to the floods after hurricane Irene.

Well done Jane  Smiley
I have my list of “give to charities” The Sally Army is one, I now give to Help OUR Hero’s, and local Cancer charities, I often drop something of at the shops, and usually come out having bought something, I don’t see the Sally Army around here much now they always use to be in town but not anymore, we have a shop though.

I agree, Charity Begins at Home, that’s my personal opinion

I don’t give to the likes of Oxfam as I always feel there is someone “creaming” of it, that and other reasons, this is one, I hope I don’t upset anyone but this is how I see.
Many years ago when I was about 7 and attending the Pakefield Primary School, at some point in the year, on a Friday before we finished for the weekend we were given a small envelope, on the front was always a picture of a malnourished child, we were told to get our parents to put some money in the envelope and return the said on Monday, as I said it was many years ago in fact 55 years and nothing has changed we now get it all to regular on the TV. So what do we give this money for if nothing changes? I don’t give to it and haven’t done for years.

Thanks everyone.   wave I didn't post it to get a pat on the back.I just thought it might make some one think if they have something to think of people like the Salvation Army,I had forgotten them, they do things for everyone not just a particular cause.I agree about alot creaming it off.I also alway's support Help for Heroes and the British Legion.I don't always agree with the reasons they have gone to war but they are just doing as ordered and at a huge sacrifice,so I support that. The main thing I think is that by doing good, you can do some good for yourself the feel good factor on a Monday is good.I was just amazed at some of the people I contacted who didn't want to know.Perhaps it wasn't a big enough gesture. But its great to read all your responses and see we are all on the same wave length with the local charities and long may it continue.
And I must mention Hollywood cinema who donated the tickets in the first place, well done them

I agree with that!  Over the past 2 or 3 years I’ve donated a number of household items - furniture, (working) electrical appliances, etc to the Heart Foundation - the large shop   Then, late last year I decided to upgrade my 18-month old 32” Sony Bravia flat-screen TV (HD Ready) to a 40” HD set - so I had to get rid of the old one.  Having tried to sell products before - with little or no success - they always want to knock the price down! I decided to donate my existing TV to the Heart Foundation shop.  I went there to arrange collection and was asked, by the lady in charge, if it the screen had a black surround.  I said that it did - the response was “We can only sell them if they have a silver surround.” I queried this and was told that this is what the customers want.  So, I offered it to EACH (E.A. Childrens’ Hospices) and they were only too pleased to accept it.  So I now take any such items (big or small) to them!

I like giving to any charity but dont agree with the old adage 'charity begins at home' charity begins where there is need and where I ve got more than I need and they have less than they need, no matter what culture, colour or creed

Sally Army - great organisation. They were very supportive to my mum before she died a few years ago, so I support them when I can. I tend to agree with the comments about Oxfam. I'm finding them very commercial these days and do wonder how much money actually goes to the cause. The other group I support is the RNLI. Although I now live the furthest point from any coast, (missing the Lowestoft beaches at this time of great weather) I still think they deserve all they can get. Well done Jane for your donation.
