AVG 2011 (free version) « Posted: 02 October 2011 at 11:55 AM »

I may have mentioned this previously, but cannot remember.  Anyway, I have AVG-free 2011 and it is doing my head in! It updates twice a day - morning and evening and there is nothing available to alter this apart from deleting the updates.  The problem is that when it is updating (which seems to take ages), my computer comes to a standstill.  I find this really frustrating.  Does anyone else have this problem please and does anyone know how to overcome it?

Yes its how it is im afraid so i got rid of it as my computer done the same it was a pain in my butt Grin I have now changed to avast free anti virus it updates when you put the pc on but does not take agaes and it dont slow the computer down. You have to register your email but its completely free and has great reviews and have never looked back maybe you should give it a try and let me know how you get on. Obviously you have to get rid of avg and there is a website about avast or you can google it for reviews hope it helps.

There should be an option to set updates to manual which will leave you in control of when and how often you update.

I do not use the free AV as I have all my computers on Kaspersky (FREE from my bank) and I also have it on my mobile phone (shows how much I think of it)
I did remove the AVG from my daughters partners computer as it was doing much thae same as your's is, I have friends with Avast who are happy so vinnyboys idea could be your cure.

Oh thanks Vinnyboy, will give that a try later today.  I am worried that this stupid long updating problem with AVG is damaging my computer too - perhaps using loads of memory or something.  Thank you.

Actually you 'can' change the setting for this, although AVG don't make it easy to find!
I have it, and I have the same issue, but I put up with it reluctantly.  However, this is what you do...

OK, assuming you have Win7, click on the task manager on the bottom right of the task bar, and rightclick AVG, then when the rightclick menu appears choose open user interface - if you have winxp then you have to press control alt and delete and choose the option to open task manager.

Once you have the user interface open, click once on the update manager to highlight it, then rightclick.  When the rightclick menu appears, choose open in advanced settings.  When that new box appears, click on the plus symbol next to schedules, and click on update schedule manager.  And voila, you can change how often it updates, and what time to do so, plus a whole host of other options.

Hope this helps!

Why not install the latest version and see if it's better behaved?
I've not seen any issues with the PC's I've put it on.

Well that is a complete mystery Funkychick, why doesn't it update on yours I wonder.  Perhaps you have opted to not have any updates at all then.  You can do that but they don't recommend it.

JustStu, which is the latest version then?  I thought the 2011 version was the latest one. I still haven't changed to Avast yet - bit nervous of doing so at the moment and not sure how to do it anyway. I would have to get rid of AVG first wouldn't I and that would leave me open to viruses until I install Avast.

JustStu, have clicked on your link and installed the 2012 version, if that doesn't solve the problem will have to ditch AVG, but hope I don't have to. If I do, will install Avast like Vinnyboy suggested.  Thank you for your help.

Glad it worked. There have been quite a few issues with the 2011 version, which may be why they brought out the amended 2012 version so soon after.

Re: AVG 2011 (free version) « Reply #24 Posted: 19 October 2011 at 07:42 AM »

I'm a bit late jumping in on this one Tongue But here's my input Smiley - I always use AVG simply because of how fast it is. It's just down to how things are set up, as have already been mentioned if it's set to update twice a day then it probably will slow you down. I update mine once a week, maybe more. I'd also check the scheduled scan settings as it often is set to scan more than you really need to, and is set to scan as soon as you turn on if you miss a scan. That's usually what slows it down! if you turn off 'scan on computer startup if a scan has been missed' it should help a bit Smiley

I'd never use Kasperskey. I tried it a couple of times and it was so painfully slow. It's the worst anti-virus I've ever used. I'm not sure why everyone is suddenly hyping it up so much.

The only way to get rid of anti-virus slowing you down for a bit, is to completely get rid of it, and of course no one recommends that Smiley

I’ve used Kaspersky for around 10 years and am very pleased with it.  I’ve never noticed it cause my computer to slow down.  Obviously, as long as a particular product suits your needs - that’s the one for you.

I have been advised that AVG free is not as good as it once was. Apparently there is a new one Microsoft Security Essentials which is very good.

vinny - why not do a Google search on "AVG 2012 Reviews"?  I just did and the first result was from CNET who gave it 4.5 stars out of 5 - read up about it and see what you think.  I have Kaspersky on my PC and AVG2012 on my laptop and it's fine.

I have been for many years an AVG enthusiast, after having had issues with Norton.  However I agree, I too have had issues recently with AVG.  A friend had problems with removing AVG 2012, to the point where the uninstall corrupted the whole Windows install!  I had to do a system restore in order to get Windows working correctly again, and even then there were files left over from AVG.  Instead he now runs Microsoft, and it seems to be effective.  On the list of things to do for me is to do the same, remove AVG and switch to the Microsoft Security Essentials package.

I do hate when antivirus software manufacturers make it hard to uninstall their products, to me it makes me blacklist any of their products in the future.

Tried it, and it didnt work.  It crashed halfway through running, every time I tried it.  I searched online, and this is a common problem amongst users, with the only option it seems to delete all files and change the root keys in the registry.  I hate messing about in the registry as one wrong move and you're done for, and so I left that part alone.

I think you're the problem!  Grin  But seriously, it's so frustrating when that sort of thing happens.  Can't help wondering if the program makers  are doing it deliberately - to make it difficult to go to another program.  Hope it all works out . . . eventually!

I use Kaspersky on all of my systems
If you bank with Barclays then you get it FREE and for three devises
I have my own laptop my wife's laptop and my phone all on the same allowance.
The desktop and my business computers are also covered with Kaspersky via another bank account with Barclays
have used it for many years without any slowing or crashing problems.
Put AVG on the daughters system and she was happy with that until she changed to Barclays and now is (I believe using the same KISS as I am)

Re: AVG 2011 (free version) « Reply #40 Posted: 20 October 2011 at 01:13 PM »

I've had the free version of AVG security on my computer for some while and have had no problems that I can recall. I upgraded to 2012 yesterday and I'm running a full scan as I type. It went up to 86% in about ten minutes and I thought it would be finished in no time, however, an hour later and it's just moved to 87%. As long as it finds no problems I might let it have a teabreak soon.  Cheesy

After joking about the time it took AVG 2012 to do a full scan yesterday I have to report it lasted for three hours. I've only used 50GB of the hard disc and not added anything new between this scan and the 2011 version's scan which took about 80 minutes. Has anyone else had the same problem?

This info is not of any use / help to you - but yesterday I did a full scan (Kaspersky) of my PC - and that took 2 hours - which is what I would expect.  I also did a scan (AVG 2012) of the “important parts” of the laptop and that took just under 15 minutes

Sunny: Go to this "page":

Scroll down the page and there’s an Orange “button” (see below) marked:  “Download Basic Protection”.  Just click on that!

Hi Trigger , thanks, got it , now I got mail from A V G  this morning to say that they will clean up the P C  for me  by accepting it, cleans the Hard drive the Registry, old files etc, as all P C `s slow up after some time, and this will enable P C to operate fast, what do you think I should do, I have saved it for now, but just want to know if it is genuine., thanks.

I suspect (others will soon point it out if I'm wrong!) that it's usually a "sprat to catch a mackerel" - they usually do it once for free - but only clean "X" many errors, and you pay for the program to clean the rest, and so on.
I'll send you a PM about this shortly.
