I may have mentioned this previously, but cannot remember. Anyway, I have AVG-free 2011 and it is doing my head in! It updates twice a day - morning and evening and there is nothing available to alter this apart from deleting the updates. The problem is that when it is updating (which seems to take ages), my computer comes to a standstill. I find this really frustrating. Does anyone else have this problem please and does anyone know how to overcome it?

Yes its how it is im afraid so i got rid of it as my computer done the same it was a pain in my butt I have now changed to avast free anti virus it updates when you put the pc on but does not take agaes and it dont slow the computer down. You have to register your email but its completely free and has great reviews and have never looked back maybe you should give it a try and let me know how you get on. Obviously you have to get rid of avg and there is a website about avast or you can google it for reviews hope it helps.

There should be an option to set updates to manual which will leave you in control of when and how often you update.
I do not use the free AV as I have all my computers on Kaspersky (FREE from my bank) and I also have it on my mobile phone (shows how much I think of it) I did remove the AVG from my daughters partners computer as it was doing much thae same as your's is, I have friends with Avast who are happy so vinnyboys idea could be your cure.

Oh thanks Vinnyboy, will give that a try later today. I am worried that this stupid long updating problem with AVG is damaging my computer too - perhaps using loads of memory or something. Thank you.

Actually you 'can' change the setting for this, although AVG don't make it easy to find! I have it, and I have the same issue, but I put up with it reluctantly. However, this is what you do...
OK, assuming you have Win7, click on the task manager on the bottom right of the task bar, and rightclick AVG, then when the rightclick menu appears choose open user interface - if you have winxp then you have to press control alt and delete and choose the option to open task manager.
Once you have the user interface open, click once on the update manager to highlight it, then rightclick. When the rightclick menu appears, choose open in advanced settings. When that new box appears, click on the plus symbol next to schedules, and click on update schedule manager. And voila, you can change how often it updates, and what time to do so, plus a whole host of other options.
Hope this helps!

JollyJapes, thanks to you too. I don't have Win7 - I have Vista Ultimate, but thank you anyway.
