ASDA Lowestoft upstairs ??

Does anyone know what has happened to the mezzanine floor they were allowed to put in ? The planning permission was granted at the same time roughly as the petrol station was and yet there is nothing

Yes from a friend of mine who works there. They are not going ahead with it at this current time or in the near future due to the costs and time involed to do it apparently even asda are feeling the pinch aswell in this current climate. But what they are doing after christmas is they will be putting instore a full time pharmacy which will be handy if you get your shopping there and also need to get prescriptions. They wont be starting on that until january when the store is a bit quieter so i guess that will be a welcome to some.

I think is was included in a post I made last week concerning a debate on planning persmission- - it think that was where I saw it. It said that Asda were planning mezzanines in 40 stores over the next couple of years and that planning permnission was not required due to the fact that it was purely an internal alteration (or they greased the right palms in the first place). Personally I'd have thoght that anything that wold increase the footfall and therefore the traffic, would require permission but the supermarkets are a law to themselves as far as planning is concerned inspite of the views that may be aired on here.

I agree frankie but they did need planning permission for it here and there was an uproar about them needing it. Its the same with the empty units opposite asda several people wanted to go in but asda owns the buildings and the council then said if you get anyone in they will have to pay us as well as you so most people declined moving in so the place remains empty. Im only going on what my friend said at asda and she is quite high up in the store.Maybe it was when they applied to put the second floors in the stores is when the lowestoft one came about and the council said you have to get planning permission which was granted but as i say at the moment they dont intend to put it in for the near future anyway.

Pay Asda and the Council for what?
I was under the impression that the reason retailers weren't renting the units is because there were tight rules on what could be sold from the units.

The people who originally agreed to go in agreed a price on rental and charges for the units. A few months before they were to go in the council then said you will have to pay us rental and rates too. ASDA argued with the council but the council won which meant that whoever moved in they would have to pay two seperate amounts of rates and it was deemed to expensive so of course ASDA were not happy and they were even considering leaving lowestoft in dispute but in the end stayed. Basically its quite complicated but WDC do make it hard for businesses and we wonder why no one comes here with business.

every business has to pay rates to the council.
It sounds more like Asda trying to charge higher rental charges than it should.
Also, do you honestly think Asda would consider closing a busy supermarket just because it may have disagreed with the council over charges to someone elses shop?
