Question: Should the Speed Limit on Motorways be increased to 80-mph?
Yes - it should be increased.
No - it should stay as it is.
Don't care

Yes FC but I did not add that as I would hope our drivers are all very careful and have also taken the advanced driving tests.

(yes I have and I will say I took one twice due to a poor result)

I agree with you that there are a lot of bad drivers and then there are also a lot of VERY bad drivers.
Today the wife, daughter and myself were crossing the car park "road" at the Yarmouth B&Q, very clear vision and other than the wind there was no drop in visability for any one, yet a car complete with smoking very large driver sporting a blue badge honked his horn for what seemed to be 30 seconds at the three of us as he sped along the front of the store.
A seemingly large 'woman' passenger shouted "get out of the F###ing way idiots"
I did think perhaps the driver was thinking he was on the motorway....
There are no walkways at that car park so to get to or from your vehicle to the store would require you to cross an area where vehicular traffic is so one would think that the drivers would know this and therefore adjust their driving accordingly....
Or does that only happen in fairy stories

What is the total milage from start to finish on your trip frankiesays?

186 miles from Banbury to Carnforth and motorway for all but 4 miles of it. I got very good fuel consumption - just over 60 mpg as opposed to the usual 46 mpg and I would usually drive at that speed on pleasure trip and especially when paying for the fuel myself. The consumption would have been less due to a few miles of "stop and go" but I reset the calculator after the first jam as it would not have been a fair reading. The car is a company car so I have no need to worry about wear and tear other than the fact that it is not my car and so therefore should be looked after. It is just a tool of my trade and I am just coming up to 30k miles and the car will be 12 months old on Dec 20th. Its not so often I'm out every day of the week nowadays but judging by this experiment if I was I would be driving for an additional 7-8 hours per week. Some of my journeys are a lot further than this example though.

A little disconcerting to read
" The car is a company car so I have no need to worry about wear and tear other than the fact that it is not my car and so therefore should be looked after. It is just a tool of my trade   "
I would have thought that being a tool of your trade then if that tool becomes broken your trade would then suffer? I am not having a go it is how I see it I use a transfer boat to and from ship and shore, it is not mine and it can be replaced though I try to use it in a way it will not only save the company money but by doing that benefits me in the long run.
I can ride around at 95% throttle and use lots more fuel and get to port or ship a smidgen quicker and wear out the item far faster than it does at 75%
The company has less expenditure so that can be passed to the employees (in the case of the company I work for that is how it is)
I still maintain that the speed on a M-way is fine at 70, the biggest problem is teaching drivers how to drive, then add into the equation that all LGV's are limited to a max speed 58/60 MPH so your doing 80+ and then there are two LGV where will that put you ? Road rage because the LGV's are blocking the way, you get passed and that is when 'time' is so important that it is tried to be "made up" (I do not say you do this but I do know this is what happens even at the present speed settings)

I think you'll see that I said the car SHOULD be looked after BECAUSE it is not mine - however, the car is a lease car paid for on a monthly basis by the company irrespective of wear and tear. But by wear and tear I refer to tyres (part of the lease) and oil & fuel (paid for by the company when on company business) and on top of that a hour of my time is far more expensive that a gallon of fuel (or anybody's time for that matter).

I don't understand what you are getting at with the LGV example, a motorway has three lanes so I would need to be blocked by three vehicles to be slowed down but that is not an issue, it happens every few miles. I think the answer to safe driving is to always assume that everybody else is an idiot e.g. is likely to pull out in front of you, brake suddenly for no reason, etc. and never to get stressed when somebody does something idiotic.

I agree with your last part

and not to change the topic to care I will stay silent on except for the M-way speed

Travelling on several motorways yesterday i noted that most drivers were doing over 70mph and many were driving well over 90mph.
If you live in London you gotta be quick otherwise you don't get out, it's a nightmare.
