I think the driving tests should be changed accordingly, like a mock motorway where learners can practice driving at those kind of speeds.

This issue is a smoke screen to get us discussing things other than the goverments failure to tackle the real problems.
It does though highlight their contempt for green issues as much more fuel will be used.

If we want to go green then speed limit on motorway should be set at +/- 55 mph. I cannot see that being a popular choice with most people.

It has to be done Morty if they are serious about it. Also start shutting down airports instead of opening new one s.

There was a 50 mph limit back in the 1970's during a fuel crisis and It didn't prolong journeys at all.  And most people stuck to it.

Put yourself in the governments position.

UK economy flat lining, possibly heading for recession. European banking industry on the verge of collapse.

By proposing to raise the speed limit there will be good head lines from much of the press (with maybe a quote from the Tax Payers Alliance and/or the Association of British drivers).
Increased speeds will mean more fuel burnt, hence more profit for the oil companies. Maybe more accidents so more profits for the car industry.

Of course it will mean more air and noise pollution, and maybe more pressure on the NHS, but these costs are externalised so count for little in the governments thinking.

How many people on here actually use motorways regularly? I think an 80 speed limit would be no problem and on long journeys it does make a difference which I know to be a fact as I do 30k miles a year of which 95% is on motorways. I think we should maybe take a lead from the French though, they have a lower speed limit for when it is raining. Difficult to enforce maybe but people should drive slower when visibility is less. there are lots of maniacs who think they should drive falt out irrespective of the conditions.

Looking at the current results of the poll I think there should some qualification of whether the voter is a regular motorway user, voters that do not use the motorways regularly would not have the experience to make a judgement - a bit like asking men the most painless form of child-birth.

Frankie, you do not have to be a regular user to know what motorway driving is like and how it has changed over the years.   I have been driving on motorways since 1965 when I passed my test and although I don't use them nearly as much these days, mainly because there aren't any in Norfolk & Suffolk, I am fully aware of the current 'state of play' on them.   I used the M1,M67,M60,M56,M6,and M58 motorways just two months ago.   There are plenty of idiots driving on the ordinary 'A' roads these days - they have been overtaking me every morning this week in the fog on the Acle Straight, driving in excess of the 60mph limit in conditions that should not see speeds more than 40mph.  It gets worse on motorways.  They think they are immune from accidents.

I think we are all allowed our opinions, if we have a brain I dont drive but i am often a passanger on the motorways so have as many eyes as a driver perhaps more because I am not concentrating on driving I can look around and see the moronic driving around.  Big lorries overtaking at high speed, people driving up your bum, cars over taking on the inside
