Herring Fishing « Posted: 20 September 2011 at 08:10 PM »

I have just caught up with a BBC show with Melvin Bragg about the herring fishing from Great Yamouth. This has reminded me of when I was at Pakefield School in the late 50's and the BBC came down to make a film about fishing from Lowestoft. They came to the school armed with a huge reel to reel tape recorder, and asked if the class could form a choir and sing a song which would from part of the film's sound track. I was lucky, after being auditioned by the head Mr Newson, to be chosen as one of the singers, and there was also a girl soloist, I can't remember who. We went over the song a few times and then it was recorded. When the film was aired on TV we were all allowed to collect in the hall and watch (live tranmission - no video recorders in those days). Does anyone who was at the school at that time remember this event?

I believe I do Charles and the singer was Deniece Fisher who lived down Stradbroke Road. She had a lovely voice and by strange coincidence I was only thinking of this very subject a couple of weeks ago. I can remember how her song went but can't remember the title - it was something like "buy my caller herring"

There’s a traditional Scottish Song Caller Herrin’ - wonder if that’s the one you refer to?
Here’s a link to the Lyrics - and also a recording of the song -by Cilla Fisher from an album “Songs of Fishing” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFtXrT5sxRk

I watched this programme too, wasn't it fantastic!  I am not old enough to remember it myself but come from a long line of fisherman families, 8 generations on both sides.
I thought the song the descendant of the Scottish girls sang was great, thanks for the link Trigger, I shall look it up.
It makes you feel proud of your humble heritage, what tough times, I thought one man summed it up perfectly 'Boats of wood and men of steel'

I was there Charles, I remember it very well.
I watched the programme about the Fishing industry the first time it was shown then again on Catch-up. All the episodes have been good, They had a bit about the package tour firms going bust in the 70's, now don’t you think that sounds a bit familiar?

The Programme is ..The Reel History of Britain. well worth watching.

Thanks everyone for all those replys. That was the very song Trigger, thanks for the link. Also on there is a vintage documentary worth a look. I expect the BBC doc has gone the way of so many old films. It would be great to find a copy of it.

I have serched the site Meryl, but no luck on the film. However, a good selection of other films and DVD's for sale on the history of the region. Well worth a look, so thanks again for the suggestion.

Was googling around and came across an interesting BBC webpage - "The Rise and Fall of the Fishing Industry on England’s East Coast" - it has a number of short film clips of the fishing industry - including 6 from Lowestoft.

“The twentieth century was a turbulent time for the fishing industry in Britain. We examine the rise and fall of the industry and capture people’s first-hand experiences of chasing the shoals.”

Have you heard the excellent recording “Singing the Fishing”?  This was originally written for the radio (a Radio Ballad) - and is very interesting - combining folk songs / the recorded reminiscences of fishermen of the time, and sound recordings.  Here’s a Link to a BBC article about the programme.  Amazon still sell the recording (although today they only have one copy left) - but very highly recommended if you have an interest in the Fishing Industry.

I will look out for the book FC, sounds interesting. I would also recommend Singing The Fishing. I recorded this off the radio some years ago, it was part of a series of radio ballads produced by Charles Parker. It has some genuine recordings of fishermen, some from Lowestoft,  talking about life on the boats, as well as an excellent sound track of music and verse by Ewan MacColl.
