margaret: as I mentioned - I failed the 11+Plus - but the Headmaster told my father he thought it was more down to “Exam nerves”.  Interestingly, one boy - who was not very good at most subjects passed!  He was at the Grammar School a couple of months and then joined us at Secondary school!

I was always in the top class throughout my Secondary School days  . . . left school with no qualifications (not so necessary in those days!).  A few years later I attended Evening Classes at the College and achieved 4 “O Levels”!

I went to the Grammar School. Most of my friends went to the girls school at the top of Winnipeg Road and I really wanted to be with them but I did finish school and passed five or six O-levels.

I pleaded with my father not to let me go to the Gram I did not want to leave the rowing for rugby and did not want to leave the metal work that the secondary school had as the equipment left the gram standing.
Dad went to the head master and I stayed where I was.
I thanked the head master and was able to put trophy's in the school cabinet for rowing and weight lifting.
Not going to a grammar school never did me any harm

Being the only one from my primary to go to the grammar was hard. I struggled to get used to going from the "bright kid" in school to average. After a couple of years we merged with 2 secondary moderns anyway, and that was another turmoil, so not the easiest time for me. However made great friends in school, some I just reunited with online.
