Sorry HC, I've been living up in the NW for the last 18 years so am out of touch. I remember having a mate who lived around there in anold house that had a huge garden, I think that may have formed part of it along with some agricultural land maybe? I'm sure somebody here will know better though.

Isn't that a small estate that was planned by Oldman & Routledge?

Happy Chick - the Dunston Estate was built on land that was once part of Ivy Farm.  When Ivy Farm buildings went into ruin the land was then farmed by the adjoining Laurel Farm. At that time the farmer was a Mr Mobbs whose name lives on in Mobbs Way where the Cold Store and Oulton Industrial Estate is. Laurel Farm is still a working farm using what little land there is left to farm!. The present farmer combines this with his bed and breakfast business having converted some of the outbuildings into dwellings. Ivy Farm buildings stood on the sweeping bend in Hall Lane ( on the left hand side heading towards Somerleyton) between the rather expensive houses built there and two semi-detached houses (now knocked into one!). A little further on there's the sharp bend where Laurel Fam stands.  Most, if not all, of the farmland around this area is owned by SCC and was farmed by tenant farmers. Laurel Farm house is now privately owned and the owner rents the farm land from SCC . I'll dig out a photo I have of the ruins of Ivy Farm that I took in the 1980s and post it later. My knowledge on the matter being gained from having been an Oulton Parish Councillor for well over 25 years!!!!

Happy Chick: Here's the photo of Ivy Farm buildings taken in 1987. It was quite a rat infested place at that time. I'm not sure when it was totally demolished but I'd guess it was in the 1990s.

Not that this is relevant but I lived for a while on Gorleston Rd  when we "bomb" dodged in the early 40's.Back then there were fields behind the bungalow and you could see St Margaret's church spire. Then across the road from where we stayed and across a field was the Fat & Bone factory.

Hobart Way was just open fields before the estate was built Happy Chick. If you want to know the history of Oulton here's the link to a website I 'knocked up' a few years ago:-
http://awalkaroundoulton.weebly.com  It will let you know where some of the street names are derived from etc.,
Meg: This has all changed now!!I lived for 23 years(1965 to 1988) in Pound Farm Drive which runs parallel to Gorleston Road. Everything eastwards was farmland until you reached Fir Lane. I too could see St.Margaret's church spire from my backroom windows!. I saw it gradually being taken over for housing and it is now all built up and intersected by Peto Way and Millennium Way. The Suffolk Fat and Bone Factory is now demolished and the land that it stood on and some of the land eastward of there towards the Dunston Estate that Happy Chick was talking about, is earmarked for a further 450 dwellings. This will fill in the big chunk of land north of Sands Lane and nearly up to Hall Lane. Camps Heath will then be joined to Lowestoft!! What was a landfill site (previously a sand quarry) on Hall Lane will become a 'country park' and some of the Fat and Bone Factory site is still being investigated for possible contaminants due to the nature of the work that took place there. Have a look on Google maps to see the difference.

Would that be the sand pit up on the hill where their used to be lots of horses Robbie? If so I spent many an hour there exploring while my dad's lorry was filled with sand. It all went to the Kier site on Waveney drive when they were doing the groundwork for Bolton & Pauls

We used to walk up Woods Loke to Fir Lane. This was a dirt road back then.Does anyone know where the word "loke" comes from?I don't think there are any more "lokes" in the area.

My mother and Grandmother always called Birds lane Birds Loke. That was the lane that joined Kirkley Run and the bottom of Notley Road. The "run" was the stream that ran from Carlton, through the old golf course and under the road at the bottom of Kirkey Run and along to the Fen.

According to the dictionary sites a Loke is a private path or road.

Farnkiesays: Reference the sand pit. That was the one you describe. It ran along the south side of Hall Lane on it's straight part. After all the sand/gravel was extracted it was used by the District Council as a household refuse pit. It is now all landscaped and turned into grazing enclosures for horses. There are a lot of horse riding enthusiasts in the locality. As I said earlier, eventually this will be further landscaped and turned into a country park. It cannot be used for housing due to gases that still emanate from it. I don't know what effect that has on the grass that the horses eat!!!!! Maybe it makes them jump better!!
FC: Hubbard's Loke runs from Corton Road through to Gunton Church Lane near Gunton St.Peters Church (housing on the southern side and famland on the north side).

Margaretpeek: Thanks. Glad you found the Oulton website interesting. As I say on the site I would appreciate any copies of old photos of Oulton and the surrounding area that anyone has, so that I can update the site.

It would be a nice place for a park, lovely views across the marshes as I recall. There was a fresh water spring there as well, I'd never seen one before, probably oozing a nasty smelling water if it is still there.

Re: Oulton « Reply #24 Posted: 13 September 2011 at 09:54 AM »

The spring is still there on the beach much over grown now. I remember going there in my young days.
The sand pit in Hall lane is also the place they dumped loads of oil from a tanker spill on the beach.
