Is the 'Big Society' happening?
« Posted: 30 August 2011 at 11:14 AM »
A genuine question.
Is anyone aware of any 'Big Society' ventures by charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups ? this has was previously vaunted by Mr Cameron as the way to save former 'public services' that have had funding reduced or have been axed by councils.
There is a Big society minister and bank according to this article - Big Society Bank can help voluntary sector ( Link -
http://www.eadt.co.uk/news/politics/big_society_bank_can_help_voluntary_sector_1_1005611
) so I am wondering if this is working or just more Tory whitewashing.

The public health dept in NHS should be a social enterprise in October - watch this space

I think that one of the problems with this idea is simply that those people who would be willing to help out are 'already' volunteering their services to charities or other organisations. There are only so many hours in the day, and you can't force someone to donate their time and services if they dont want to - otherwise it wouldnt be voluntary. In my view, the idea is a non-starter.

Social enterprises are not about volunteers they are paid workers as before but 'owned' and managed by themselves, they get Government funding for a period until they become self sufficient Well thats the idea I believe

If that happened - what about the company's insurance for the 'volunteer drivers'? Perhaps they'd have to take out their own!

Why not go the whole hog and insist that all those who wish to be MPs will be 'volunteers' and all expenses will be met out of their own pockets. That I would consider as being a true, dedicated service to the country. Mind you I then suppose that will only be considered by the very rich!! - maybe that's what the 'elite' are aiming for!!

I do not know how it would work out driver wise, they have to pay drivers overtime for sunday's and thats why they want volunteers to do it, or expect us to work for free on a Sunday more like after working Monday-Saturday
