Maybe I have explained this wrong
when I connect the touch to my laptop itunes starts automatically this brings up a pop up telling me there is an update to down load
So click to download and install to the ipod = result failed D/L
Click to D/L ONLY = result Failed D/L
Log on to the Apple store Direct via ipod and select D/L and install = result failed select D/L only = result failed D/L
The ipod touch 4G is working fine it is just the download of an update which is giving me stress (well not really)
I have tried on two different laptops (one with Vista, one with W7) and I did try with my old desktop running XP but that did not like the version of itunes so was a no brainer to start.
The ipod will communicate with B.T and it will 'bump' and log on via wifi etc so I don't think there is a problem with the ipod itself I think it's the D/L or download manager which according to Apple is the latest and is uptodate.
I have now told my itunes NEVER to show me the pop up to install updates.
which is a little annoying as in my view you pay £?
?? for a unit which you expect to be faultless in evey way and like Microsoft the support is free and current (ie updated regularly)

Nikkai, it may be a problem with the actual downloaded software itself. I had a similar thing with Windows. I am running Windows Vista and I have Microsoft Office 2007. Back in June there was an update appeared for MS Office but every time I tried to install it, it failed. Then out of the blue about 2 weeks ago it installed - no problem.

I know what you mean I also have had some Microsoft programs not load correctly and then when a new installer package is developed it all goes swimmingly
I had the nice people from the Apple store assist when we uninstalled the old package then cleaned the C drive then installed the new version which went in fine (according to the machine and the tests they did) but still the update would fail.
As I have said I have turned off the auto update now.

sounds like you have the itunes and ipods set wrong, they are set to be controlled from itunes directly. means that when adding ipod to a different copy of itunes, it will wipe old tunes and add all that are in current itunes tracklisting. What u need is to have them set as data storage devices, which will allow 'you' to decide what to do. Cant remember much more than that, as its been 3 years since I last did it. I was the 'go to' guy in the backpackers hostel to copy tracks from one ipod to another, as itunes didnt like you doing that and it needed 'work' to do this.

Apple restrict the swapping of music files via ipod iphone etc so you will have to use an outside program to get round this small annoyance.
My daughter uses media widget for her and her partners ipods
Though I have not used it she recommends it as you can then keep the play list and files which are on the ipod
Otherwise when you connect to a different computer (one not registered in the ipod) it will delete the content and rewrite with the computers itunes library

That's actually not strictly true. Yes Apple restrict the way in which you can swap MP3's, as they want you to all keep on paying for them through iTunes and downloading them. MP3's are stored on an iPod in system files, which are hidden by default. You simply have to browse your iPod files using the computer system via My Computer and then clicking on the iPod, and then you go into folder options and selct the option to 'show' system files. The MP3's are not stored in a nice manner, so it takes a while to find one specific file you want, but at least you can copy files from an Ipod onto a pc, and then back onto another iPod.
Also, the advice above about deleting contents is not always true. As I already stated, there are 'two' options for using iTunes with an iPod. The first option links the iPod to Itunes and yes, it will delete the contents of another iPod when connecting. However, the second option is to use the iPod as a storage device. This is the better option, but many people do not even know that this option is available. Using this option, iTunes will 'not' delete your contents.
