Here is a little question
Has any one got a 4th gen ipod touch?
I have one (great little thing) but I can not get it to update via my 'windows' based laptop I've taken it to the Apple store twice now to have the updates done and again there is a pop-up telling me to update the software but no joy I just get a failed message
Even if I try to just download the update for install at a later time I get the same result.
is this normal for ipods or is it just because I am running a windows machine with itunes rather than an Apple.

I don't have an ipod but I have the iphone 3GS and have had no problems with that and my windows laptop.  What did they say at the apple store?

The first time I went in they said that because it was a 4G the software was not uptodate enough and it was why I got the error.
I reloaded itunes as instructed
The next time I had the pop up it failed several times so I went back to the store and they had a problem up dating the software?
I again reloaded itunes as instructed but this is still a problem,
There seems to be no difference to the running of the ipod and it has played faultlessly since I have owned it even to the videos I have
it is so annoying to have a pop up each time I connect to my laptop

I had an iPod touch....until I got an iPhone 4 and have never had a problem updating the touch or the iPhone, hubby has inherited the iPod touch (he always ends up with my cast off's  Grin) I assume you have iTunes and when there is an update you just click and download it, maybe best to check your settings so that once it is downloaded it updates the iPod automatically.

Yes I have the latest itunes (according to the download that is)
Have tried to just download the update
Have tried to download and update manually
have tried to download and update automatically
have even linked the ipod direct but no joy I get the same error message each time
even went to a different computer and changed the sync to that but the same happened

That is an odd one.....I run windows and never have a problem with updating, I assume your music etc is stored in your Window's music folder as Itunes is just a player so might be worth uninstalling iTunes and then restalled it again and import the music again. Also it might be an idea to reset the ipod to factory settings and start all over again.

Hi Annie,
I have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes several times (at the instructions from the Apple store)
My music is in itunes and I really do not want to load the library again 19.72 Gb of music
Though I like my ipod I am getting a little ticked off with it and its (Apples) ideas of control over what it will allow etc.
I have and own cd's so have loaded then to the itunes so I can listen while at work but some will not load the information because that info needs to be downloaded from some web site which can not find the album or tune I have so it gets listed as "unknown" and then to edit that you get all sorts of "cant do that etc"

Check your iPod settings.  There are two options; allow iTunes to control your library or use your iPod as a media storage device.  I always recommend the latter, as the former is very restrictive.  Maybe your device has somehow changed to the other type?!

I agree JJ but I still think it would be worth a try to put the ipod back to factory settings. Nikka though your music is showing in Itunes it's stored elsewhere (Wndows library) and reads the music from this library so if you delete the music from Windows library you would lose everything on the iPod and in Itunes.
