Hello
Wonder can anybody tell me where Mariners lane was [not Mariners Score].
Doing a bit on the family tree & it came up in 1841 census.

Mariner's street is across the main road from Mariner's score but I have never heard of Mariner's Lane-maybe that's what the street was called back then.

I think Meg may be right. In the Jack Rose/Dean Parkin book about the Beach Village entitled 'The Grit' there is a page which gives details of the 'Scores'. It states that Mariners Score is actually believed to be named after Samuel Mariner who once owned property there. Earlier it had been called Swan's Score due to the Swan Inn which stood there. I feel that this must be the location of Mariners Lane as this duality appears in some other documents which refer to an area of Lowestoft as being 'Mariners Lane OR Swan Lane'. I'll look up where I read this and post it later.

Reference is made to the following people:-

Maurice Alexander   -  Surgeon of Lowestoft. Former occupant of a property part of which was later converted to a Tun house and the residue added to a Brewery office in Swan Lane or Mariners Lane, Lowestoft.

John Elph -  Owner or occupier of the 'Three Mariners' in Lowestoft and a storehouse, formerly a Tun house (the one above?) adjoining 'The Hole in the Wall' (they even had them in those days!!!!!).

William and George Everitt - Former occupants of property in Lowestoft, near the Hempland, comprising a Malthouse or Malting Office, Steep Room, Barley Chamber, Kiln, Drying House and other buildings and also other property in Swan Lane or Mariners Lane, including the 'Three Mariners' (mentioned above).

Some further information for you Tug. I have identified  the location of Mariners Lane. On page 19 of Jack Rose's book 'Jack Rose's Lowestoft' (printed 1981), there is a map circa 1842, which shows that Mariners Lane intersected what was Cross Street (now demolished?) and Hempland. It started at the High Street (next to the Town Hall and was opposite Martin's Score ) and ran through to St.Margarets Plain/Thurston Road junction where the present 'First and Last ' pub is.

That's OK Tug - glad to be of help. I met Jack on a number of occassions. I too have all of his books. Although I'm a 'foreigner' I've lived in Lowestoft since 1965 and have taken a great interest in the town and it's history. My wife is Lowestoft born and bred. I am also a keen family historian. My wife's maternal family were originally a Gt.Yarmouth family but quite a few of them moved to Lowestoft. One of my wife's uncles was the publican of the 'Rising Sun' in the old beach village for many years (George 'Bloater' Nicholson) - I'm sure Jack knew him well.
When I went into town this morning I made a point of checking some of the street names and Meg was correct in assuming that Mariners Street was originally named Mariners Lane (so it had really nothing to do with Mariner's Score after all - apart from probably been named after the same Samuel Mariner that I mentioned in a previous post).  It is now only a very short street and a 'dead end', as you probably know, as it was intersected by Jubilee Way when it was built. What was the 'western side' of the street is now all rebuilt with housing, with only short lengths of the adjoining Dove Street/Crown Street West joining on to St.Margarets Plain/Thurston Road. It may be worth your while visiting my old friend Ivan Bunn at the Records Office (in the Library) - He has a lot of photographs of that part of old Lowestoft and may well be able to identify the house your ancestors lived in.
