Just had a little look on google and it told me :-

AD 1200 – Norwich: the second largest medieval city
Norwich was the second largest city in Medieval Britain:

Never too sure with my memory,- James I think Dunwich did come into the running though I'll have to google that now

fc: don't wear yourself out Googling!  Cheesy

“Dunwich was the capital of East Anglia 1500 years ago but the harbour and most of the town has since disappeared due to coastal erosion. Its decline began in 1286 when a sea surge hit the East Anglian coast, and it was eventually reduced in size to the village it is today. There is a project underway to reveal the 'lost' city with high-tech underwater cameras.

At its height Dunwich was one of the largest ports in Eastern England, with a population of around 3000, eight churches, five houses of religious orders, three chapels and two hospitals.”

Yes thats it Trigger I did know the history but didnt have it at my fingertips If I remember rightly most of the villages and small towns in Suffolk were highly important because of the wool trade Blythburgh has a huge church for a tiny village and Lavenham I think was an important trading centre too

Even Kessingland!

"There has been a settlement here since Palaeolithic times. Between the Hundred River and Latmer Dam was once a large estuary which was used by the Vikings and Romans. The sea provided the village with its main livelihood, and at one time the village paid a rent of 22,000 herrings to their Lords, which then made it more important than nearby Lowestoft."

Corton was more important than Lowestoft. Things looked up for us when they bkroke Lake Lothing through to the sea and formed a harbour.

Was that due to gravel extraction? Or global warming?

I bought the second house built in Rosedale Gardens (road not estate) but I think Elmdale was the first full road of houses. I was surprised how big Gisleham is, Gisleham corner is at the back end of Carlton near what was the electrical shop but the first row of terraced houses on what was the old A12 towards Pontins are also listed as being in Gisleham.
