Would someone coming here for a holiday from London be allowed to use their buss pass to travel from Lowestoft to Norwich please?

When we came home on holiday last year we enquired about a pensioner 'bus pass, with the Waveney Information place. We were told: NO bus pass. To get one, you must tender proof that you are a Waveney ratepayer. Apparently the low fares are paid for by a Waveney Council subsidy.

We went to Torquay earlier this year and used ours there, I think you will find they are a national thing, subsidised by the government, that's why it might be on the "cutting" list. We actually applied for ours at the local library, they even took our photo for it.

Do you mean you used your Lowestoft bus pass in Torquay? because I was under the impression that although it was a national scheme each town or borough funded or part funded it and I am sure I read or was told  with the Waveney one all journeys must start in Suffolk

From the “directgov” website:

Eligible older and disabled people are entitled to free off-peak travel on local buses anywhere in England.
Where you can use your bus pass

If you're eligible for a free bus pass, you can use it anywhere in England during 'off-peak' times. Off-peak is:
between 9.30 am and 11.00 pm Monday to Friday and all day at weekends and on public holidays

Services outside England
The England bus pass only covers travel in England. It doesn't give you free bus travel in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. If you live outside England, you'll need to apply for a different pass from your local council. Link

I use mine for the Park and Ride service in Norwich.

Don't know the background to Bus Passes - but this current one is the latest as I think prior to this it was just local.  I just park at Postwick P&R - show the card on the bus, pay £1 - and that's it.

FC.. Trigger just answered your question, we don't live in Lowestoft but do use the pass there when we visit family, when we were in Torquay we left our car at the hotel and used the bus it was far easier to get about and of course it was free.

About paying a £1 PandR, are they a private company run thing?

I've just got mine out, my bus pass that is, It actually states on the pass, that it is funded by the Government with your Local Council, I think Ken was misled, I dont remember proving we pay CT here, just an up to date photo ID to show you are that person

why do you pay £1 then?

New Regulations - which came in earlier this year (I think).  Other than parking - a manned-office, toilet facilities, etc were removed - cut backs!  It could be that the £1 charged is for parking your car and the bus is free.  But, it is still much cheaper than paying for car parking in the City.

Not so, SD - this only applies to travel in England.  It doesn’t give you free travel in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland - different rules apply.  See the link I gave to the “directgov” website, in my Reply #8 today.

Margaret - the rules have changed quite a bit since 2 April 2011.  There are no ticket machines (based on the Postwick Park and Ride, the one I use) - and there are no “facilities” provided.  You pay on the bus - £2.30 for a single occupant for the day - the more people in the car, the more you pay! People who have a Bus Pass - show their card to the bus driver and pay £1 for the return ticket.  This particular Park is closed on Saturday & Sunday.

Re: Bus Pass regulations « Reply #33 Posted: 17 August 2011 at 08:43 PM »

Quotes from Llywodraeth Cymru - the Welsh Government’s website:

Concessionary bus fares for the elderly and disabled

“We provide financial support to enable local authorities in Wales to provide free travel on registered local bus services for residents of Wales aged over 60 years and disabled of any age. The support also provides free travel on local buses by companions to disabled persons.”

“Do I qualify for the Elderly and Disabled concessionary fares scheme?

You should qualify for the scheme if you are:
• Resident in Wales (this will have to be proved through documents that show responsibility for expenditure for example :-Council tax, rent, water rates, utility bills From a gas or electric company, benefit documents, bank statements"

Well I'm living in London and use my Freedom Pass (Must be the national one) when coming up to Norfolk / Suffolk, you can use them after 9.30am on bus's, trains are not included unless in London. Bus pass's in London (Oyster cards) cannot be used on any other buses apart from in London.

Hope that helped Cheesy

This link provides information about the Freedom Pass: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14305.aspx
Including:
Can I get a Freedom Pass?

You can get a Freedom Pass if your only - or main home is in a London Borough - and you meet certain criteria - age (60 and above), or have an eligible disability.

And also from http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/railcards-discounts/freedom.html

Re: Bus Pass regulations « Reply #40 Posted: 26 August 2011 at 06:43 PM »

Disabled & Elderly, I am partially sighted so have the benefit of a national freedom pass, some Freedom passes are restricted to London only but others can be used around all of the UK.
and yes, the Freedom pass is paid by your London Borough, therefor I will have to apply for whatever Suffolk offers when I move here...

All the information regarding freedom passes can be found here: http://www.londoncouncils.gov.uk/services/freedompass/default.htm

The only other bus passes that can be used in London are Oyster cards or travel cards, they can be used nowhere else but London.
