Tesco (in town) is my “corner shop” for the basics but - whilst not a fan of supermarkets per se, I do my main shop at Asda.  I have literally just returned from there - now calming down with a coffee + chocolate chip cookie (only 1, and I don't mean the packet!) - and the staff are much friendlier.  Bought Wall’s Carte d’Or ice cream which is £2.97 - Tesco is now £3.45.  I paid £2! It’s the lovely Mascarpone ice cream - ummm!

We prefer Morrisons - prefer their bakery things and their meat is a lot nicer.

i found i saved over £7.00 on a shop of £50 compared to the others, which is a great saving to me. tescos are getting more and more expensive by adding 30-50p on some items,i expect a small price increase by not that much. i dont mind morrissons for some things, again like you the bakery bit....(.i must find where these places are as i dont know yet as only moving on sat.)i do enjoy the "thrill" of bargain hunting though in town,i will walk from 1 end to another to save a few pence!!!

Morrisons is about two and a half miles south of the bascule bridge just off the A12 on the South Lowestoft Ind Estate.

There is talk of another Morrisons opening somewhere at the north end of Lowestoft in September, think it is where AHF is now.

There was also talk i.e. rumour - that Sainsburys are supposedly interested in going there - I'll keep everything crossed that it's them and not another Morrisons in the town.  Remember - variety is what is needed! Wink

Tescos have outpriced itself for me apart from a few bits if passing. Asda mainly but Iceland in town is a lot cheaper on a lot of commodoties although it doesnt sell everythig, also Aldi and Lidl are good value if you have a car to get to them

My Lowestoft supermarket experience is extremely limited, but I like ASDA over the TESCO downtown. I have never been to a larger Tesco or Morrisons so I really can't give an opinion. But how fresh is the produce among the Lowestoft supermarkets? Price is important, but I think so is freshness and quality. To me it seems that ASDA is pretty good in both, but I wonder if that is a correct impression.

Asda is as good as any for freshness but not in the home shopping you often get sent things with a very short sell by date

Going slightly off-topic -

"Shoppers Feel Squeeze As Food Prices Rise"

Cash-strapped consumers are increasingly turning to budget food stores and cheaper brands because of rising prices, according to a report.  A nationwide survey from consumer watchdog Which? suggests shoppers have been forced to become more savvy at the tills.

Some 84% of people are worried about the cost of food, the study found. Nine in 10 said they had noticed an increase in the cost of food in the past year, and a third said they had reduced spending on groceries this year. Fewer people are willing to splash out on organic meat, and nearly half are cutting back on organic fruit and vegetables.
Richard Lloyd, executive director at ‘Which?’ said: "Despite inflation falling slightly in June, people are still feeling the squeeze from soaring food prices. People are changing their behaviour and becoming more savvy shoppers when it comes to groceries, but there's only so much they can do to cut back on the basics."
Link to article.

Apart from the noticeable price rises - there are also the “hidden” ones where, for example, the pack remains the same size, the price remains the same - but the contents are reduced e.g. 500gms now 425gms.

thanks for the info on veg van,i will look into that. thing is with the increase in prices is you can only cut back so much, then you have to start not buying certain things, and with us at the moment, the added cost of the fuel to get it,as local shop is stupid, like £1.37 for a bag of sugar! his view is "pay my prices or travel 10 miles to get it for 98p",hence moving (2 days to go!) to a more populated area, my daughter/hubby have got  college courses booked up for sept, i home educate my 14 yr old son, we will use the car so much less,so enableing us to have more money in the long run!
yes i will miss the chickens, just has 9 chicks hatched, and (bella hen) has just hatched 4 more, i have 5 turkeys, they just wander round the garden chasing the cat!

as i dont drive we chose the house because it was so close to everything, and i think they look nice aswell. i know its gonna be a big change from living the rural life, but hey-ho needs must! just by moving to town we should have a better life style its just finding the shops and supermarkets ect,and those other things like markets. i think if i have others points of view on the best in that area it can only be a positive!

I have yet to find his shop open.  Not good for any retailer.
Perhaps he should join LOL and blatantly promote his business as others do.

Re: which is the best supermarket?? « Reply #32 Posted: 22 July 2011 at 12:17 AM »

supermarkets treat us like the mugs we are. I'd love to boycott the lot of them but it would be hard to do so. I class tesco as the worst abuser of our intelligence. Asda have been the cheapest all-round supermarket for 13 years running according to the annual Grocer survey. Tesco never will be as long as their points system is subsidised by their pricing. I have a Tesco points card and they usually pay for a weekend away in the autumn. It would be difficult to put those saved pennies from Asda away every week to do that.

In my view the supermarkets are more expensive than the butcher is for meat and the f&v shop is for f&v. We should try to buy only the stuff from supermarkets that is truly cheaper than anywhere else and not be conned into buying everything from them which is their aim. Unfortunately we can't complain when the local shops close because we don't use them. What will happen to supermarket pricing once they are the on ly shops left?

Australia has great shopping centres which dwarf ours but there food quality I fond to be excellent The strange thing I found was that most of there products seemed to be half as big again as ours.  So super markets are not all bad and if managed correctly can be excellent.
One of the great pity's is that they are gradually forcing branded products out of the market place & many of those are of high quality, but when it come to vegetable they are produced in quantity they are very presentable and appear to be of good quality, but many of them turn out to be rubbish, they go rotten in no time and it annoys me.
Like wise I went to the vegetable stall on the old market plain and was very disappointed with what I bought I should have refused them.

I would have to say Asda, simply because they have the best prices and do a price comparison on your shopping to ensure they are the cheapest if they are not 10% cheaper they give you a voucher which is helpful. I would also say that there fresh fruit and veg are long lasting.

Tesco have a total inability to source fresh tangerines (all versions). I don't know how they always manage to have tangerines for sale that are totally on their last legs. If you manage to buy them fresh it is at least three weeks before they get to that state. I think, like in other food groups within the shop, they screw the supplier down to such a low price that he gives them the worst he has.

I went to Tesco recently and they had beef joints at half price. i looked at a piece of topside of average size which was 11.99 and in a pre-pack. I went to the butchers down the road and got a gi-normous piece of topside which did our family of 6 for three meals. It was local beef and cost 14 quid.

I never buy my joint in Tesco. For some reason they just don't look right.

Apart from that they are all the same size and just have a slab of fat tied to it.

I go to Longworths in the high street. Nice people and nice meat.
