Do as in the army and use your night vision. We do night hikes at Minsmere and Dunwich no torches used your eyes adapt.

Solar lighting would be interesting especially as LED street lighting is now in production although only suitable (for now) small side roads and alleyways. LEDS use much less power and dont waste energy as heat. Yet to see any examples used in the local area but have seen photos of others elsewhere.

Does that mean we have to eat more carrots, Malcolm?

.... and the reduction in expense when it's bedded in will be passed on to us ratepayers? Personally I think it's yet another fad like windpower, solar cells and all that green tripe. With the idiots that go past my house late at night, I'd rather have streetlighting that lets me see who is about. It doesn't bother me too much, but what about women walking home at night - the nightclubs kick out after the dim period starts and there are all sorts of creepy people about - and not a security camera anywhere near.
A good friend lives out in the Saints with no streetlights at all, and apart from the stars, which are amazing, it's damn spooky!

I have to say that I don't understand that how turning lights of at night can save money, I was under the impression that we produce more electricity at night than we consume because coal fired generators cannot stop generating electricity because they have to be on twenty four hrs a day and I also thought the same almost applied to nuclear power, perhaps some one could enlighten me?
